  • Nature-packed Drenthe park five minutes' cycle from Ruinen
  • On the edge of Dwingelderveld National Park, with bike hire available
  • Heated indoor pool, restaurant, miniature golf and lake beach on site
Nature lovers, gather round – you’ll have a choice of three amazing national parks to visit when you stay at Europarcs Ruinen. This strategic Drenthe location is just on the edge of the Dwingelderveld National Park (the largest wet heath area in all of Europe), with the Weerribben-Wieden and Drents-Friese Wold national parks also within easy reach. Visiting those open spaces is nice and easy from here – you can cycle to the Dwingelderveld National Park in about 15 minutes, with bikes available to hire on site if you need them. However, you don’t even need to leave the park to get stuck into nature-themed activities – a nature playground and petting zoo are on site, and there’s also a lake beach area where everyone can have a paddle and a splash in the water. And the list of facilities doesn’t stop there… the site also has a miniature golf course, a playground, an indoor play area and a heated indoor pool with a paddling pool and slides for the kids. Extra activities are laid on for the kids in the summer months, and you might be able to join a tour of the nature reserve and nearby sheep fields with a resident forester to learn a bit more about the area. The park is about five minutes’ bike ride away from the village of Ruinen, which has shops and places to eat; for even more convenient meals, take a table at the on-site restaurant.

FHU grass campsite (Private restroom amenities)

Liked: The pool was lovely the kids enjoyed the petting zoo and the mini golf.
Our pitch had toilet facilities which were very clean and worked well.
Having the water park available for free was incredible, we went every day.

Local attractions

Even if you don’t need to visit the village of Ruinen for amenities, it’s worth dropping in to explore its unusual layout – because of the way the place grew, it ended up with a field of cows and sheep right in the very centre. Try to time your visit with one of the market days to sample some top-notch local produce. Several other villages and towns are worth visiting nearby too – perhaps the wooden houses and windmills of Meppel (20 minutes’ drive) or Giethoorn (half an hour) for a canal cruise or self-powered boat trip. Havelte (15 minutes) and Diever (20 minutes) are interesting places with dolmen to see as well. If you’ve got kids to entertain, there’s a handy local place at Vogelpark Ruinen (five minutes), and more options at Slagharen theme park (half an hour) and Wildlands Adventure Zoo (35 minutes). You might also try the treetop adventures of Klimbos Appelscha (half an hour) or a sobering look back to the past at Kamp Westerbork prisoner of war camp (25 minutes).
