It's free, quick and easy!
- Glamping in safari tents two kilometres from Ruinen
- Slagharen theme park/ Wildlands Adventure Zoo within half-hour drive
- Traffic-free site with playground, trampoline and small farm animals
Plenty of peace and quiet, and with nowt to do in terms of setting up your digs for the night – how very civilised is life at Camping de Berghoeve, an easily bikeable two kilometres from the dinky Drenthe town of Ruinen.
Shops and restaurants may be a 10-minute bike ride away but the vibe here is a relaxed rural one – chattering birds will most likely be the first sounds you hear of a morning, and there’s a little menagerie of goats, rabbits and chickens to say hi to. The bulk of the site is kept car free so the kids can run about in safety, roaming from treehouse to playground to trampoline.
Fast free wifi stretches across the site for peeps who like to keep an eye on the outside world, and there’s a communal campfire area for those who prefer their pleasures less tech based. For eats, each spacious safari tent houses a little kitchen that can be wheeled out into the open air on fine days or kept undercover on less promising ones.
Time to stretch your legs? There’s plenty of choice for two-wheeled travels on the area’s network of bike paths and hikes through the Dwingelderveld National Park. Wildlands Adventure Zoo and Slagharen theme park are both within a half-hour drive for those seeking tiddler-friendly outings.

Local attractions
Even the keenest cyclists and walkers should be kept busy for quite a while with the many kilometres of trail running through the heaths and forests of the Dwingelderveld National Park (15 minutes away by bike). If you’re intrigued by what’s overhead too, plot a course to the Planetron planetarium and observatory (15 minutes’ drive).
You may well see wild beasts as you wander, but there are more to meet nearby at Ruinen bird park (five minutes’ drive) or the fab Wildlands Adventure Zoo (half an hour), which is home to a collection of around 7,000 creatures.
Glimpses into the lives of prehistoric humans can be on the schedule too with a visit to Hunebedcentrum archaeological site (35 minutes), where there’s a museum packed with ancient bits and bobs found around the site’s stone formations. More recent history is brought to life at Kamp Westerbork Remembrance Centre (25 minutes), a thoughtful and thought-provoking memorial and museum on the site of a former concentration camp.
