Venture to Vakantiepark de Lourenshoeve for family-friendly travels in the Twente region’s varied terrain – trips to this area of sprawling hills, heather-covered fields and sandy river beaches are made even more memorable when you have this peaceful and spacious site as your base.
Getting out into the countryside’s a cinch from here as bikes are for hire on site and staff are on hand to dole out tips on the top trails to take on two wheels. Ride to scenic spots like the Wierdense Veld peat bogs (35 minutes) in the south-eastern part of the Overijssel province, or drive to the Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park (20 minutes) for strolls across heathland.
Order from the site’s bakery service a day ahead and you can pick up specially prepared sandwiches in the morning ready for picnics out in the lovely landscape. Returning to the site for lunch instead? Pick a grassy spot in which to lay out a spread (made up of food from a supermarket in Den Ham, a five-minute drive away) and eat while you supervise the kids as they scale the playground and bounce on the trampoline.
An equestrian centre is at the park too, with lessons available for guests who’d like to hone their horse-handling skills (or just learn the basics). On days when you’d rather be indoors, games, books and wifi are on hand in the canteen, which also sells drinks.

There's many a museum to be visited within 20 minutes’ drive of the site if you’d like to learn about the culture and customs of the Netherlands. Head to the Historical Museum Vriezenveen for the lowdown on local history, or turn up at the Twente War Museum for a fascinating intro to the area’s military past.
For attractions with an atypical twist, head for Het Veenmuseum, with a focus on the natural phenomenon of peat bogs, or the Dijkman Klompen Atelier, which delves into how clogs are made (both also 20 minutes).
Kids got not one jot of interest in cobbling? Hold their attention with a trip to the indoor swimming pool at Zwembad De Kolk Wierden (15 minutes) or slap on the SPF if the sun's beaming down and get to the open-air Aqua Mexicana waterpark (30 minutes).
And if you've no kids and are aiming for a decidedly adult-focused day out? Tours of the Grolsch brewery are also half an hour's drive from the site.
