You might not realise this is what your hols have been missing all along, but here it is: a museum dedicated to chickens. The Dutch Poultry Museum (10 minutes’ drive) is a surprisingly fun visit, particularly if you time your trip to coincide with one of the chick handling sessions so you can play with cute fluffballs. Ready for some bigger animals? Try the excellent Burgers’ Zoo (25 minutes) or Ouwehand Zoo (half an hour). And if that’s enough animal action for now, perhaps take the tiddlers for a day at Zeumeren leisure park (25 minutes), for miniature golf, waterskiing and pirate-themed playtime at the Treasure Island play park. If you’re seeking to put something a little more cultural on your schedule, try days out among the art and outdoor sculptures at the Kröller-Müller Museum (half an hour), getting a taste of life in days gone by at the Netherlands Open Air Museum (half an hour) or wandering around the gorgeous gardens at Het Loo Palace (40 minutes).
