Camp Šćepanović
View prices & book- Family-friendly Mojkovac campsite with spectacular mountain views
- Tara River Canyon 15 minutes’ drive; Durmitor National Park an hour
- Spacious shared kitchen and an alfresco dining area with a barbecue
On an immense grassy plateau overlooking the forested slopes of three mountain peaks, all the pitches at Camp Šćepanović are surrounded by an abundance of greenery and have spectacular 360-degree views. And of course, this place is about more than just pretty vistas, as it’s a great spot to base yourself for alpine hiking as well as fly fishing and rafting on the Tara River.
As far as your time on site goes, the owners are keen to ensure you feel right at home, so they’re provided a large shared kitchen where you can cook and eat, and a covered alfresco dining area with a barbecue and grill. Put your feet up in the wooden gazebos and gaze out over the views, keep an eye on your offspring in the brightly painted play park, or – if you’re feeling more active – get to know your neighbours over a game of volleyball.
Practical facilities include spotless modern shower blocks, a laundry service and electric hook-ups on all the pitches. Handily, there are food shops and a few restaurants in Mojkovac (10 minutes’ drive) for those days when you want to give self-catering a miss.

Local attractions
Camp Šćepanović is a stunning springboard to hiking adventures in the surrounding mountains of Bjelasica, Sinjajevina and Prošćenske Planine, where you can sometimes spot wild ponies grazing in forested foothills. The site is also close to stunning lakeside and hilltop walks in Biogradska Gora National Park (20 minutes’ drive), or canoeing and mountaineering among peaks carved out by glaciation in Durmitor National Park (an hour).
One of the area’s other biggest draws for active souls is the Tara River Canyon (15 minutes), a haven for white-water rafting adventures in rocky gorges, where you can bathe in pristine water off small sandy beaches. If you’d rather stay on dry land, go walking in the untouched primeval forest of Crna Poda (20 minutes), and if your stay coincides with winter, there’s also a small ski centre at Cmiljača, an hour away.
Birding fans should bring the binoculars, as this untamed region is home to a huge number of endangered raptors like falcons, hawks and owls, as well as storks and black ibises.
