General

  • Eco adventure lodge with wellness facilities and massage treatments
  • On the outskirts of Jalcomulco, a 50-minute drive from Xalapa
  • Rock climbing, whitewater rafting, canyoning and ziplining on offer

Modern wellness facilities meet adrenaline-spiking tour options at Picocanoa Rodavento, an excellent eco lodge on the edge of Jalcomulco founded more than 20 years ago in the hopes of encouraging travellers to explore a remote part of Mexico’s Veracruz state.

And it’s certainly achieved this. Adventurers flock to this area hidden amid jungle-clad hills: from whitewater rafting, mountain biking and rock climbing to exploring a canyon and flying over the treetops on a zipline, there are plenty of guide-led activities to get your heart thudding here.

And for winding down? That’s sorted too at the site’s massage cabin or in the temazcal prehispanico steambath. To stay out in nature, you could also relax on the banks of the Pescados river – which you can hear the murmur of from the park’s terraces – or at the outdoor pool and bar areas. Wander around the manicured gardens too, keeping a keen eye out for the birds that regularly flit between the greenery, then settle in by a communal campfire to watch a traditional batucada drum party.

The next day, have a jaunt to Jalcomulco for some authentic Mexican food, or head out into the surrounding valley in search of caves and wild swim spots amid the mango plantations and sugarcane fields.

Local attractions

Teeny Jalcomulco is known for its nearby rapids – it’s said to have some of the best white-water rafting in Mexico – so rushing down the river is a must here. Organise an adventure through the park: there’s also horse riding, trekking and rappelling to look forward to if you’d rather not get wet.

Before or after your time in Jalcomulco, drop by Xalapa (50 minutes’ drive), the capital of Veracruz. This city is just the spot for swotting up on Mexican history in the Museo de Antropología, which houses artefacts from several local civilisations. Check out the colonial buildings too, including the baroque-style and yellow-coloured Catedral Metropolitana de la Inmaculada Concepción de Xalapa.

The city surrounds are made up of cloud forest and huge peaks – in fact, the country’s highest mountain, not to mention the most pronounced volcanic peak on the planet after Kilimanjaro, the Pico de Orizaba – is visible from Xalapa's Parque Juárez. If you’re up for a real challenge, make Tlachichuca (two hours and 40 minutes) the next destination on your trip and climb to the 5,636-metre top from here.
