  • Peaceful site on a farm on the Sûre river, in the Luxembourg Ardennes
  • Lac de la Haute-Sûre 20 minutes’ drive; Luxembourg City 50 minutes
  • Playground and ping-pong tables; bar and evening entertainment
The valleys and forested hills of the Ardennes are yours to explore from Camping Berkel, a family-friendly farm site on the outskirts of Bockholtz village, a 15-minute drive from the town of Wiltz, in northern Luxembourg. The fairly remote location makes this a place where you can switch off and truly embrace nature, whether on long woodland hikes and challenging bike rides (speaking of which, the site is part of the ‘bed and bike’ network, with secure storage and cycling maps available at reception), or simply by sitting on the banks of the Sûre river, fishing rod in hand. On hot summer days, the shallow waters of the river are also popular for paddling. Kids will have much more to do here besides splashing around in the Sûre: they can make new friends in the playground (with climbing structures, swings and a trampoline), play ping pong or tennis, or just chase each other on the grassy lawn. Of course, they might just prefer to spend their time getting to know (and feed) the resident animals… The grown-ups have not been left behind, either, with a bar and an outdoor terrace (complete with fireplace) where you can sip a drink while soaking up the peaceful vibe or reading a book from the on-site library. If you’re up for something more sociable, Camping Berkel runs an evening entertainment programme that ranges from bingo sessions to full-on disco nights. Dogs are welcome on site (though they should be kept on a leash), and there are shower and toilet blocks, a launderette and a covered washing-up area, plus a communal fridge to store your barbecue provisions.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Superb, friendly and peaceful site alongside the river. Very welcoming and helpful hosts . We loved the bar and games room tucked away discreetly within the farm buildings; and the waffles and bar food were excellent. Excellent, clean facilities. A really friendly small site, situated in a very picturesque area. Great for walking and cycling trails.

Local attractions

The waters of the Sûre are too shallow for anything other than paddling, so if you want a swim, you need to head to the Lac de la Haute-Sûre (20 minutes’ drive). This is also a popular spot for watersports, from canoeing to diving, or you can hire a solar-powered boat for sailing around the reservoir. The town of Diekirch (25 minutes) is home to the National Museum of Military History (MNHM), with dioramas illustrating the 1944–45 Battle of the Bulge and displays ranging from World War II vehicles and weapons to uniforms and personal items. Attractions in Luxembourg City (50 minutes) include the elegant Palais Grand-Ducal (residence of the head of state), the Renaissance-era Cathédrale Notre-Dame and and the 17th-century fortifications of Fort Obergrünewald. There are interesting collections of Old Masters and decorative arts at the Musée National d’Histoire et d’Art.
