  • Small and friendly family-run site 400 metres from the beach in Karklė
  • Palanga Amber Museum 15 minutes’ drive and Klaipėda 20 minutes
  • In the Seaside Regional Park with access to coastal bike paths
Time for a seaside stay? Karkle Camp is in the little village of Karklė in the Seaside Regional Park, and it’s a fabulous spot for a peaceful break close to the coast. ‘Close’ is the key word here – this family-run site is just 400 metres from the village’s family-friendly Baltic Sea beach, which means you’ll be able to wander over there whenever you like for swimming, sunbathing or strolling along the sand listening to the sound of the waves. This is a simple and laidback spot rather than one with lots of on-site entertainment, but all the essential facilities are in place. Guests have access to an outdoor kitchen, picnic tables, a launderette and shower blocks, and there’s a play area with swings and slides. The village has a small supermarket and several places to eat and drink, so you won’t go hungry or thirsty either. Want to see what lies a little further along the shoreline? There’s access to coastal bike paths running between Klaipėda and Palanga, or you can take the 25-minute stroll to Olando Kepurė for clifftop views over the sea (particularly excellent at sunset…).

Local attractions

If you’re here for the golf, your first stop will be the National Golf Resort (15 minutes’ drive) for its challenging 18-hole course. However, there are other ways of keeping active: MadBay Wakepark Klaipėda (25 minutes) has obstacle courses for wakeboarders and kneeboarders, and there’s a floating assault course at Jump Park Palanga (20 minutes). Popular seaside Palanga (15 minutes) is known for its sandy beach, as well as its interesting amber museum set in a 19th-century mansion with landscaped gardens, summer weekend concerts in Birute Park and nightly performances at the musical fountain. Should your kids need any more entertainment, Dino Parkas Radailiai (20 minutes) offers up animatronic dinosaurs, fairground rides and mini-golf games. Gorgeous Klaipėda (20 minutes) has a beguiling old town, aquariums in the Lithuanian Sea Museum and a canal that’s popular with boaters, kayakers and anglers. From there, take a ferry across to the UNESCO-protected Curonian Spit (25 minutes) to see the ever-shifting dunes, hire a dinghy to go sailing or scare the kids with the evil-looking wooden sculptures at the Hill of Witches (an hour and 10 minutes).
