  • Well-equipped site in the Tuscan hills, a 10-minute walk from Chiusi
  • Chianciano Terme 15 minutes’ drive; Montepulciano 25 minutes
  • Playground and pool on site, plus wine and olive oil tastings
The Tuscan hills make a pretty dreamy destination for a holiday: think medieval hilltowns, lush landscapes and peaceful vineyards (not to mention the wine they produce…). And it’s here in the eastern part of the region, close to the border with Umbria, that Chiusi in Camper is located. This family-run site is part of a farm a 10-minute walk from the historic town of Chiusi, known for its Etruscan heritage. It’s easily accessed via the A1 motorway (also rather promisingly known as Autostrada del Sole – or Motorway of the Sun), but if you’re travelling by public transport the owners will be happy to pick you up from the railway station. In addition to spacious pitches, Chiusi in Camper has a modern toilet block with a wheelchair-accessible toilet and hot-water showers, plus washing machines and a drying room. There’s also a small pool and a playground to keep the kids busy, and a shop selling local produce. Guests can prepare meals in the barbecue area, and are welcome to take part in guided tastings of the farm’s wines and olive oils. Dogs are welcome at this site, and will certainly want to join you as you explore this spectacular countryside on foot, heading to places like the woodland around the river Oriato waterfalls (10 minutes’ drive); alternatively, you can hire a bike on site and pedal to Lago di Chiusi (half an hour by bike) or to protected nature areas like Lago di Tottolo - Oasi Faunistica WWF (40 minutes).

FHU earth travel trailer campsite

Liked The site the facilities. The owners the pool. Everything, perhaps the beat Pitchup site we’ve been to, the hospitality and the wine tasting were. Paulo and hos family were so helpful, the facilities are brand new clean and all working, including free washer and tumble dryer, Paulos parents covered in his absence for food and winetasting, absolue stars they were, Would we return? Of course, Bus to Montepulciano 200 yards away, busy road though beware !! That is the only -ve

Disliked Busy road badly with placed bus stops to Montepullchiani and the 1km walk to old town Chiusi, but hey it’s Italy

Local attractions

No doubt you’ll wander into Chiusi (10 minutes’ walk) before too long for some shopping or to scope out a place to eat or drink, but it’s worth dedicating a bit of time to exploring this historic town, strolling around its Etruscan centre and visiting the Museo della Cattedrale e Labirinto di Porsenna and the Museo civico ‘La Città Sotterranea’ underground museum. For more of that local history, take a trip to Pienza (40 minutes’ drive) to visit the cathedral, Corsignano church and grand Palazzo Piccolomini, perhaps stopping for a stroll through the field where Gladiator was filmed (a couple of miles from the city centre). Also worth visiting nearby are Montepulciano, famed for its wineries, and Castiglione del Lago, on the shores of Lake Trasimeno and a lovely spot for a boat trip. Both are 25 minutes’ drive away. Need to slow down a little? Take a soak in the thermal baths in Chianciano Terme (15 minutes) or San Casciano dei Bagni (half an hour).
