  • Beachside site with a pool overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea
  • A 20-minute drive from Porto Ercole and Porto Santo Stefano
  • Gym, restaurant, shop, bike hire, kids’ club and entertainment
Admiring the islands of Giannutri and Giglio directly from the swimming pool is just one of the little treats guests can indulge in by staying at Gitavillage Il Gabbiano, just off a sandy beach overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. This park is on a stretch of seaside nuzzled between the Bay of Talamone and the Argentario peninsula, considered among the most scenic in Grosseto, and is in a prime position for explores. It’s four kilometres from the amenities of Albinia, reachable by cycling on a hired bike from the park, and a 20-minute drive from the pretty harbour of Porto Ercole. The site’s said to be a swell spot for kids too – guests rave about both the fab family atmosphere and the nifty location – thanks to having a pathway through the pine forest to the beach accessible with a pram. Visitors also adore the amenities: as well as a sunbathing terrace by the pool, this park has a restaurant serving fresh fish dishes and a shop stocked with local produce. Fitness facilities are on site too – great for gym bunnies who don’t want to put a pause their workout schedule – and there’s a kids’ club to drop the nippers off at while you’re exercising. With nightly entertainment organised, evenings at this park are no less action-packed than the daytimes.

Local attractions

Cross the sea to reach the Argentario harbour towns of Porto Ercole and Porto Santo Stefano (both 20 minutes’ drive) and explore the rest of the promontory from here: the Spanish Fortress and Forte Stella (25 minutes) are particularly worth visiting if you’re into your history. Another scenic settlement to set off towards by car is Orbetello in the middle of the lagoon of the same name, a commune linked up with Argentario by a manmade road. Head here to visit handsome structures like the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the Palazzo del Podestà and the ancient walls. For an inland roam, amble to Capalbio (30 minutes) and wander the historic centre before moving on to the Tarot Garden amid the Mediterranean scrublands a few kilometres out. This park dreamt up by the famed artist Niki de Saint Phalle is incredibly colourful, so don't forget to pack your camera. And the grand finale to a day out? Immersing yourself in the hot water of the Terme di Saturnia natural spa baths in the Maremma hinterland (50 minutes). The sulphurous springs, which flow from a volcanic crater and have a consistent temperature of 37 degrees Celsius, have calcified over time to create pools in an eye-catching milky-white colour.
