  • Peaceful site on a small Chianti farm with spectacular Tuscany views
  • Florence and Siena both 40 minutes’ drive; Monteriggioni half an hour
  • Farm produce for sale; tastings available; shops five minutes’ drive
Torn between staying in ancient Tuscan towns or spectacular Tuscan countryside? A break at Agricampeggio L’Apicorno might be the compromise you seek. Set in the peaceful, forest-and-vineyard swathed Chianti Classico wine region, this small site is halfway between Siena and Florence – both are about 40 minutes’ drive away, making them easily accessible for day trips. L’Apicorno is on a farm that produces goat’s cheese, honey and vegetables as well as wine. The pitches are set in the olive grove, and each offers a stunning view overlooking vineyards, forest and the Chianti hills. The site owners are happy to organise vineyard tours or cheese and wine tastings for guests, and you are welcome to meet their goats and other farm animals. Simple facilities include showers in the wooden facilities block, a washing-up area and a communal fridge/freezer to keep your food fresh. There are picnic tables dotted around the site (grab one in the evening for watching the colourful sunset), and you can put together an alfresco feast from the farm’s artisan produce – anything else you need can be sourced at shops in the gorgeous hilltop village of San Donato in Poggio (five minutes’ drive).

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: Quiet and well maintained campsite.
Had everything you need for a few nights.
Close to the local coop but still far away from any large roads.
Great communication from the owners despite me arriving quite late and wanting to leave early.

Local attractions

Florence (40 minutes’ drive) may well be on your bucket list; discover the fancifully ornate Duomo in the historic city centre, along with other big-hitting attractions including the Uffizi Galleries (home to Botticelli’s “Venus”) and Galleria dell’Accademia (for Michelangelo’s “David”), the famed Ponte Vecchio spanning the River Arno and the Boboli Gardens, full of Renaissance sculptures and tinkling fountains. In Siena (also 40 minutes), you can admire the Romanesque-Gothic architecture of the black-and-white striped cathedral, see great religious art in the Museo Civico and walk in James Bond’s footsteps across the landmark Piazza del Campo. The medieval towers of San Gimignano are 35 minutes away by car, and other magical Tuscan towns to explore include walled Monteriggioni and pink-hued Certaldo (both half an hour). For those who'd rather explore closer to home, the hills surrounding L’Apicorno are criss-crossed with a network of hiking and cycling routes. The Chianti Wine Route is close by too, including vineyards open for tours in Castellina in Chianti (15 minutes) and Greve in Chianti (20 minutes).
