If camping au natural among an ancient forest is your sort of style, you'll feel much at home at Camping Camaldoli.
Set 815 metres above sea level, this spectacular site is on the border of Casentinesi Forest National Park, one of the largest forested areas in all of Europedom. It has direct access to a network of 650 kilometres of hiking, cycling and horse riding trails along old mule tracks and past ancient bridges, churches, villages, abbeys and woodland monasteries.
This is a peaceful and natural site, described humbly as 'spartan' by the Camaldoli team, who highlight that it's not mod cons, disco lights or loud entertainment nights that their guests come for, but instead for close contact with nature and zero pesky distractions of the outside world. Keep an eye out for deer, wild boar, foxes and porcupines while you're busy barbecuing on the site's brick grills, because they often stop by to say a friendly hello on their way through their wild forest habitat.
Staff have counted that it'll take you exactly 77 steps to get to the facilities, which (as you'd probably expect by now) are all set among among a natural wooded area, and include a simple snack bar and a basic mini market selling essentials to keep you going during your stay.
Pitches aren't marked out, so guests are more than welcome to choose their own upon arrival. The bathroom blocks – always perfectly spick and span – are at the far end of the accommodation so as not to spoil the woodland ambience.

Local attractions
Right next door to the site is 16th-century Camaldoli Monastery, set among a centuries-old chestnut forest. It's a tiptop spot for a wander around, housing a walnut-bedecked reception room and great hall, as well as an ancient pharmacy that once provided a laboratory for clever monks to concoct medicines from the forest's herbs for use in the hospital next door.
Around 650 kilometres of waymarked trails cross this vast forest, giving you endless opps for trekking, mountain biking and horse riding. Ask staff at the site about where best to forage for mushrooms and chestnuts, because you'll need to get permission before you pluck anything from the wild.
Head over the town of Poppi, about 13 kilometres from Camaldoli, to sample some of the region's best ever focaccia – there's some argument as to whether or not the potato topping is better than the porcini mushroom one, so probably best get over there quick to make up your own mind with several samples. Once you've put that one firmly to bed, move on to the rest of the town's attractions, namely medieval Poppi Castle, ancient St Fedele Abbey and Agostiniane Monastery.
