With its sandy beaches and medieval villages with views of the Apennines, the Marche region has long been a well-kept secret among lovers of all things Italian. If you prefer the mountains to the coastline, book a spot at Camping Il Cippo, in the northeastern fringes of the Sasso Simone and Simoncello Regional Natural Park, on the border between the Marche and Emilia-Romagna. Sitting in a splendid pine forest, more than 1,000m above sea level on the Monte Carpegna peak, this peaceful site is well equipped for those travelling with kids and canine companions in tow – with a play area, a games room and a dog park. As for the grown-ups, they can kick back in the shade of the pine trees, sweat it out in the Turkish bath or have a little gentle exercise on the pétanque court. When you’re ready to crank it up a couple of notches, you might be interested to hear that this is the very mountain where the late great cyclist Marco Pantani used to train. If you can’t match his prowess on two wheels, there are plenty of hiking trails leading to the summit. After a day scrambling along forested paths, your belly will likely be a-rumblin’. The on-site kiosk serves a range of regional specialities (plus a well-curated list of wines and beers from local producers), or it’s a five minutes’ drive to the village of Carpegna, where there are more dining options and a small supermarket, if you’d rather use the communal wood-fired barbecue.

Liked Ottima esperienza per immergersi nella natura e sperimentare il proprio spirito da capeggiatori.
Ci venivo spesso da piccola e ho riscoperto una passione.

Disliked All’arrivo non siamo stati seguiti molto dallo staff sia per raggiungere la piazzola che per la registrazione e allaccio della corrente.
Inoltre al check out abbiamo dovuto attendere mezz’ora che arrivasse qualcuno addetto al pagamento, in quando all’arrivo non ci erano stati indicati gli orari in cui poter lasciare la struttura.
Al di là di queste piccole incomprensioni, esperienza ottima, luogo rilassante e ben organizzato, ci tornerò sicuramente.

Deep in the heart of the Sasso Simone and Simoncello Regional Natural Park, Carpegna Park - Family Adventure Mountain (15 minutes’ drive) has activities for all ages and levels of ability, including 12 treetop trails, guided e-bike tours and a fairy woodland for younger visitors. Pack an extra cardigan when you visit the Onferno Grotte caves (40 minutes), where temperatures are close to 13°C. The caverns are home to one of the largest bat colonies in central Italy, and guided visits take you along narrow passages to a bat nursery, where you might see mothers and babies hanging upside down. The Renaissance town of Urbino (an hour) is famed for being the birthplace of the artist Raphael, whose childhood home is now a museum, and for the exquisite Palazzo Ducale, with its slim turrets and elegant interiors, like Duke Federico’s study, lined with wooden inlays. The palace also houses an art gallery, with works by Raphael and Piero della Francesca.
