  • Geodesic dome in a hilly vineyard a 25-minute drive from Senigallia
  • Corinaldo five minutes’ drive; Museo del Balì 35 minutes
  • Private shower room; vineyard and cellar visits; e-bike hire
Amid the gentle hills of the central Marche region, with views of the Adriatic Sea to the east and the peaks of Apennines to the west (be prepared for epic sunrises and sunsets), La Bolla del Borgo is an exceedingly sweet spot if you are looking for a family or a romantic break in peaceful surroundings. The site sits among cherry and olive trees, next to – bonus points, surely! – a working vineyard. But more about that later. Your accommodation is in a geodesic dome with a clear top half for stargazing from the comfort of your queen-sized bed (which comes with a real mattress). And there’s a lot more to this ‘bubble room’ than the sleeping bubble, starting with a separate (and lockable) ensuite bathroom with a composting toilet and a sink. A fully equipped bathroom with a hot-water shower (plus bathrobes and lavender-scented toiletries) is just 200 metres away, and there’s also an outdoor area with table and chairs for alfresco meals. Warm summer days are tempered by cooling breezes here (the Bolla is at 218 metres above sea level), so you might want to pack a cardigan for the evenings, plus comfortable shoes to stroll among the growing vines. Speaking of which, owners Sonia and Lucia can arrange a guided visit to the cellar, complete with a tasting of delicious local wines. And if you wish to explore the surrounding countryside and its medieval hilltop villages, you can rent an e-bike on site.

Local attractions

The walled town of Corinaldo (five minutes’ drive) is accessed via the long Piaggia staircase. Take a break halfway up to check out the Pozzo della Polenta well – and to look behind you, as the landscape comes into view in between the rooftops. The Santuario di Santa Maria Goretti houses a relic of the Corinaldo-born saint. Its sandy beach and gentle surf make Senigallia a popular destination for families, and the Rotonda a Mare is a top spot for a selfie. There’s also plenty for foodies in town, with a couple of Michelin-starred restaurants and no shortage of gelaterias. The imposing 15th-century Rocca Roveresca fortress houses exhibitions. Physics, maths and astronomy are some of the subjects that come alive at the Museo del Balì, in pratica la scienza! (35 minutes) thanks to its many interactive hands-on exhibits. And the digital planetarium is the place to learn all about the constellations you might observe from your geodesic dome…
