  • Peaceful and leafy family campsite in Lazio’s Veio Regional Park
  • Central Rome 20 minutes by train and Ponte Milvio 10 minutes’ drive
  • Swimming pool; breakfast service, cocktail bar and pizzeria on site
Not all roads lead to Rome… unless you’re staying at Village Flaminio of course. Set in the historic Veio Regional Park, the campsite is a lush, leafy and peaceful oasis only 20 minutes by train to Termini station and all the archaeological wonders and museums of the Eternal City. It’s a clever and convenient base for days of discovery amid cobbled piazzas, baroque churches and the architectural treasures of the Vatican. Should you need a day off Rome sightseeing, however, treat yourself to a few refreshing laps of the swimming pool (open mid-May to mid-September) followed by a bit of indulgent lounging under a parasol on the sun terrace. The informal poolside bar serves up breakfast every morning and cocktails from 11am onwards to the accompaniment of chilled music; L’Ottavo Colle pizzeria opens for business at 7pm during the week and over lunch at the weekend. Spacious pitches are tucked under the shelter of trees, and top-quality facilities include modern toilet and shower blocks, washing-up corners and a laundry room – all are regularly refurbished and upgraded to maintain pristine standards. Reception is open 24 hours in case you run into problems; staff can sort transfers to Ciampino or Fiumicino airports for you as well as tickets to the major city attractions, and in summer there’s a regular shuttle to and from the campsite’s main square.

Liked: We stayed slightly out of season so it was quite peaceful and quiet for us. The facilities were great, they had everything you could want really including hairdryers! Also well catered for young families. The pitch area was clean and attractive.

Also appreciated the laundry facilities with lovely smelling soap provided and communal drying racks to borrow.

Location was ok in consideration of it being a big city but It directly off a busy main road. It is short walk to the train station which took you to the last stop before central Rome. You needed to swap to the metro to visit most sites from there.

There is a handy Carrefour supermarket across the road too which has pretty much everything you might need too!

Disliked: I could imagine it feeling quite crowded/busy in peak season as the pitches are very close together in some areas.

The washing up area rarely had hot water and all the plumbing was linked so if there was more than one of you washing up the water pressure would drop.

Local attractions

Rome city centre is only a 20-minute train ride away, opening up easy access to countless museums like the Capitoline complex, great archaeological sites like the Colosseum, or the Sistine Chapel and St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City. Have your photo taken by the Trevi Fountain, walk up the Spanish Steps and tour the fabulous art on display in the Galleria Borghese. Closer to the campsite is the Ponte Milvio (10 minutes’ drive), an ancient Roman bridge surrounded by buzzy trattorias and bars. Sports enthusiasts should not miss the fascist-era Stadio Olimpico (20 minutes) and Foro Italico (15 minutes), home to the top Roma and Lazio football teams as well as the Italian Open tennis tournament in May. And don’t forget the Stadio dei Marmi (also 15 minutes), a bijou stadium made entirely of white Carrara marble. Be sure to have a wander around Veio Regional Park direct from your pitch too; its 15,000 hectares turn up Etruscan remains from the sixth century BC, medieval monuments and numerous walking trails leading past waterfalls and ancient tombs in wooded valleys and steep ravines.
