  • Peaceful dog-friendly mountain retreat 400 feet above sea level
  • On the Gustav Line, 35 minutes’ drive from Monte Cassino
  • Organic and Italian products in the shop and fresh meals available
With vineyards, olive groves, fruit orchards, an organic farm and environment-friendly facilities, Wild Adventure Camping has a full set of eco credentials. Based 400 feet above sea level in Lazio, the stunning, dog-friendly mountain retreat is the sort of place where you’ll get to live out your rural Italian dream… and you’ll be right on the historical Gustav Line, a defensive line built by Germans in World War II. Peace and quiet? Tick. A few kilometres from a traditional Italian town, this wildlife haven is set over a private mountain environment with solar lighting, eco showers and eco-friendly composting toilets. Adventure? That’s sorted too, since the surrounding land has German hideouts, war trails and other historical landmarks, plus national parks and lakes one to two hours’ drive away. You’ll be quite pampered here indeed, since meal experiences such as sunset candlelight dinners or gourmet organic meals brought to your pitch are available. Options include a ‘total relax package’, which includes meals from the private, pop-up restaurant. It uses organic ingredients grown and picked from the site’s gardens, as well as a selection of their own natural unfiltered wines, and caters to all tastes and diets. The owners, Stefania, Domenico and Dom, are well-versed in organic farming and producing traditional Italian delicacies, including olive oil, fruits, vegetables, wine, flour and goat's cheese made by Dad. They’re all available to buy in the shop. Guests have plenty of areas to explore too – they can visit the farm, meet the animals and see the organic gardens and artisan work.

Local attractions

If outdoor activities are first on your to-do list, sketch out a plan of action… National Park of Abruzzo (an hour and 45 minutes’ drive) is a prime spot for hiking, biking, hunting down waterfalls or lakes and wildlife watching. Waterfall fans will want to underline the Regional Nature Reserve Zompo The Schioppo (an hour and 20 minutes), while those looking to dabble in watersports or take some ultra-scenic hikes are likely to appreciate Abruzzo’s lakes, which include Villetta Barrea (an hour and 45 minutes), Lago di Scanno (two hours and 10 minutes) and Lago di Posta Fibreno (55 minutes). Monte Cassino (35 minutes) is a spectacular abbey. You wouldn’t guess that it was destroyed during World War II and rebuilt into the current work of art. While you’re there, follow the war cemetery path (a rather historical hike, if there ever was one…). Other hikes that may take your fancy include Monte Cairo (55 minutes), Valleluce (40 minutes) and a local mountain that has sea views – just ask the site for more details on that one.

Primitive earth travel trailer campsite

Liked: Lovely mountain farm, very rural and idyllic location. Lots to see in Montecassino and Minturno.

Stefania and the two Doms. were a joy in how they assisted us on our stay. English was excellent and locally produced food was a delight.

All in all an experience, which added to our holiday.

Disliked: you need to be prepared for a rural setting in Italian hills. Your caravan needs to operate with no mains electric but other than that it's all worth the effort.

Primitive earth tent campsite (no pets)

Liked: As an American camping in Italy it is very hard to find an actual primitive type camp site where I can have the serenity of the outdoors. This place offered that! I had a great time with my daughter where we were able to actually have space and enjoy a wilderness camp setting. If you have the gear and are an experienced independent camper this place is highly recommended. Also the family who runs the camp sites and the farm close by were exceptionally gracious and helpful.

Disliked: The only thing I can say is that I almost got my car stuck in the mud due to the heavy rains. If you want to do what we call car camping make sure you either have 4 wheel drive with some clearance or able to carry your gear a small way to camp.

Primitive earth tent campsite (no pets)

Primitive earth tent campsite (no pets)

Disliked: Wir hatten Handyempfang… ;-)
