Which will it be for your Emilia-Romagna break – a seaside spot or a forest location? If you can’t (or just don’t want to) decide, opt for a bit of both at Camping Pineta. This family-friendly site is immersed in pine forest just outside the village of Casal Borsetti, and it’s got direct access to the beach too: pretty much what you’d call a ‘win-win’ situation. That fabulous location means you’ll be able to hit the beach whenever you like – it’s a free space with soft sand and a gentle slope that makes the shallows suitable for kids to splash about in. Then, when you’ve had enough of the sun and sand, retreat back to the site to chill out in the shade of the trees that dot the site. For the evenings, you could cook up dinner at the barbecue area, dine at the on-site restaurant or wander up to the village in about 20 minutes to sample its restaurants and bars. If you do choose to prep your own meals, you can pick up supplies at the site’s grocery shop or see what you can find in the village. The mix of beach and woods means there’s a peaceful atmosphere on site, but there are also options for a bit of activity if you like. A playground and games room should keep the kids busy for a while, and there are also various games and beach items for sale in the site shop. You can hire bikes here if you’d like to get out and explore locally – or you could just opt to laze around by the open-air pool for a relaxed afternoon if you prefer.

Local attractions

If you only manage one outing, it should probably be to the lovely city of Ravenna (20 minutes’ drive), to see the Byzantine mosaics in the Basilica of San Vitale, visit Dante’s Tomb and take in the grand buildings of the Piazza del Popolo. Happily, there are also some great places to dine on some of Emilia-Romagna’s delicious cuisine. For more city time, you could plan day trips to Ferrara (50 minutes) or Bologna (an hour and 10 minutes). On a smaller scale and closer to home is Comacchio (20 minutes), a pretty place for a wander. If you don’t have time for all these, see them all (and several others) in one go at Italia in Miniatura (an hour). For kid-friendly days out, take a look at Safari Ravenna (half an hour), Mirabilandia theme park (35 minutes) or the slides and rides at Acquajoss (45 minutes).
