A day on the beach, a dip in the pool and then a serving of proper home-cooked food – if such a setup sounds like your ideal way to spend a day or few, you’ll likely be most pleased with a stay at Agriturismo Acqua di Friso.
This peaceful rural Calabria site is part of an organic farm in Cropani Marina, with pine, olive and eucalyptus trees spread over much of its 18-hectare space and splendid views down towards the Ionian Sea.
Not content with viewing the sea from afar? Head to the site’s private stretch of sandy beach, accessed via a gate and a drive of a few minutes. Heading out for other destinations is straightforward, too: a couple of minutes’ stroll takes you to the supermarket and pizzeria in the village, and there’s a train station and bus stop 500 metres away for more elaborate adventures.
Outings nearby might take you off to a castle or archaeological park or for hikes in the Sila National Park… but no one would blame you if you elected to spend a good chunk of time lounging by the pool on site (while sending the bambini off to the playground if they need a touch more activity).
And that food? It’s surely one of the highlights of a stay here – the team take great care over their meals, using lots of organic products and slow-food practices. It’s also a rather special setting to dine in: take a table out on the poolside terrace for a candlelit dinner in summer, or retreat behind the huge glass windows looking out over the sea in winter months.

Local attractions
Once you’ve seen the sea and had a swim at the beach, get closer still to the marine life with a scuba diving trip (40 minutes’ drive) or a boat trip to a nearby marine reserve from Le Castella (45 minutes).
Nature exploration on dry land is certainly an option, too: work up an appetite for the tasty eats back at base with a stroll around Valli Cupe regional nature reserve (45 minutes), or head for Sila National Park to see wildlife and waterfalls. Come along in the right season and you might be able to join a mushroom-foraging trip here too.
Turn your attentions to man-made attractions with visits to the sacred art museum in Cropani (15 minutes), the castle in Le Castella (45 minutes) and the ruins of the Scolacium Archaeological Park (45 minutes), an ancient pre-Roman town with sculptures and sea views.
