After a day of hiking, mountain biking, climbing, fishing, birdwatching, skiing or whatever else floats your boat, you’ll be glad to have a site as relaxing as Rifugio Silone to return to. This Abruzzo site is a wildlife haven with four hectares and plenty of large spaces for picnics, all fenced (good news for those of you who have dogs accompanying you). Just half an hour’s drive from National Park of Abruzzo, this is the place to be if you like outdoorsy breaks. There are rivers, mountains, karsts, streams and heaps of wildlife there, and plenty of trails for feet or mountain bicycles. On site, you might spot a roe or deer popping out of the woods in the early morning or at sunset and there are often buzzards and hawks gliding overhead (before the stars come out, that is). Surrounded by mountains, views from the site include the distant peaks of Parco Naturale Regionale Sirente-Velino. With the scent of grass, pastures and the pine forests that surround Rifugio Silone, it’s a splendid barbecue setting (and there’s an on-site bar if you want something to wash the food down with). All this will come as a welcome treat after a day following the cultural path that runs close to the site. When you’re ready to scope out the local area, the medieval centre of Pescina is just 35 minutes’ walk away. Top sights include museums like Museo Ignazio Silone and Casa Museo Giulio Mazzarino, Tomba di Ignazio Silone and Piccolomini Tower. Pescara is an hour’s drive away and Rome is an hour and 25 minutes’ drive away for trips further afield.

Amazing panoramic views, peace & quiet. Greenery & mountains abound. Hot showers, outdoor seating, summer snack bar. Friendly, helpful young staff praised. Even with a concert, camping spots were secluded & atmosphere enjoyed.

Liked La posizione non è male e l’intrattenimento musicale di ferragosto, seppur semplice, di gradimento.

Disliked Organizzazione nel check in un po’ caotica. La vera nota negativa, sono i bagni, sottodimensionati per la quantità di persone presenti, ok che è un rifugio, ma almeno due per sesso, sarebbe stata una grossa mano. Sempre i bagni, molto sporchi al nostro arrivo, anche se un giorno sì ed uno no, una signora veniva a pulirli… altra nota negativa, il fatto di fornire obbligatoriamente le aree cottura. Ok per gli incendi , ma con mezzo sacchetto di carbone, neanche la brace ci accendi.. vi consiglio di comprarlo voi il carbone.

Disliked Cosa non mi è piaciuto, l'erba andrebbe tagliata visto che nelle vicinanze era alta quasi un metro è secca.
Mi piacciono gli animali, c'è un cane bianco molto affettuoso, ma la notte luì è probabilmente c'era qualche altro cane che dopo la mezzanotte continuavano ad abbaiare per diverso tempo, ed Io che volevo riposare era quasi impossibile.

Liked La pace, il silenzio, il poter dormire circondata solo da verde e montagne.
La struttura è dotata anche di bagni con acqua calda, tavoli all'aperto e punto ristoro aperto nel periodo estivo. I ragazzi che la gestiscono ci mettono l'anima, sempre gentili e disponibili.

Local attractions

It’s very likely you’re here for the gorgeous landscapes. So, hike away in the splendid Valle del Giovenco (15 minutes’ drive) or the massifs of Rocche Plateau (45 minutes). Then, head to Celano (20 minutes) for gorges and Piccolomini Castle or to the peaks of the Parco Naturale Regionale Sirente-Velino (25 minutes) for more treks, mountain biking or skiing. There are more ski slopes and hiking around Campo Felice (50 minutes) and Ovindoli (35 minutes) if that’s your thing. Those of you who’d rather spend their days by the water, seeing what fish they can snare, will be pleased to know that the Giovenco river, Sangro river and lakes are within a short drive of the site too. Meanwhile, fans of history and archaeology will be set with a visit to archaeological areas from the Roman era, such as Ingresso Area archeologica di Alba Fucens (35 minutes) and Antica Città di Marruvio (10 minutes). Aielli (20 minutes) has medieval sights instead: churches and a tower are among its assets.
