  • Peaceful and pretty vineyard site with an orchard and vegetable garden
  • A 10-minute drive from Zalacsány and 20 from Lake Balaton
  • Pub serving homemade wines; small shop, orchard, kitchen and games
Forget luxurious hotels, crowded nightclubs and packed itineraries and plonk yourself down for a peaceful stint at Dutch Hill Camping in the middle of Zala’s expansive forests and vast fields instead, around a 20-minute drive from Hungary’s lovely Lake Balaton. Relaxation is the main modus operandi of this park, which has a pub making meals using ingredients from the veg garden, accompanied by organic wines produced in the site’s vineyard. You could also opt for a glass of Hungarian beer or homemade pálinka (fruit brandy) while listening to the ambient sounds of music playing in the background. The kids can get the shared books, games and toys out while the adults imbibe; for you, there’s a corner filled with tourism brochures for planning trips to the area’s local markets, shopping hotspots, independent cafés, lake beaches and historical museums. The grounds of this park – set on a hill with eye-wateringly impressive views of the green valley below – are nifty to access from the main road if you’re up for touring the surrounds. Staying put? The orchard and vineyard are pretty places to plod around. When your hol is almost at its end, drop by the small shop and pick up souvenirs (or come at the start of your trip to buy veggies grown in the site’s garden). During certain evenings, depending on interest from guests, group meals are cooked up on a campfire or barbecue.

Local attractions

There are several worthwhile attractions and activities within a 20-minute drive of this park. Zoom over to Zalacsányi-tó lake (10 minutes) for a spot of fishing – anglers rave about the sizable specimens in this body of water – then dawdle around Deák Mansion’s rose garden and petting zoo (10 minutes). Continue scenic explores with a stop at the Teréz Anya kilátó viewpoint, looking out across the hills of Zala, before goggling at the curious shape of the Saint Anne Round Church in Kallósd, a well-known Árpád Age religious building (both 15 minutes). Another architectural landmark to admire is the baroque-style Festetics Palace, home of the Helikon Palace Museum (20 minutes). Once you’ve ticked this handsome building off the itinerary, the crowd-pleasing Lake Balaton (20 minutes) is next. Surrounded by sandy beaches, buzzing resorts, vineyard-covered hills and bird-filled wetlands, this 197-kilometre body of water is one of Hungary’s main holiday hotspots.
