When only the lush green forests of Thuringia will do, pack up your kids and make haste to Naturcamp Meyersgrund, set deep in woodland and surrounded by the soothing sounds of nature. At 15 minutes’ drive from the shops and restaurants of gorgeous Ilmenau, the level grass camping fields are surrounded by rustling trees and all connected to electricity; you can park up wherever you please, giving groups the freedom to pitch together. Families have the choice of shared bathrooms or renting private facilities (the latter a boon when you’ve got young children). Other kid-friendly amenities include a washing machine and dryer in the laundry room to keep you all looking your best. Delicious burger and pasta dishes are served in the terrace bistro (open Wednesday to Sunday) to keep young stomachs filled, and breakfast is available on weekend mornings. During the early part of the week, snacks are sold during the day. Practicalities taken care of, you can turn to the fun side of things. The therapy pool, archery range, playground, volleyball court and ping-pong table can keep you all happily active, while occasional Lego workshops take place on site – you’ll need to pre-book. Hire e-bikes from reception to go off exploring in the forest – and you can exercise your canine chums, who are very welcome on site, on the woodland trails too.

Local attractions

Biking adventurers can get onto the Ilm Valley Cycle Route straight from the pitches, and keen hikers have easy access to the Rennsteig long-distance walk through the Thuringian Forest uplands. If you fancy seeing the forest on horseback, there’s a riding stable 15 minutes’ drive away; visit in winter and you’ll do most of your exploring of the area wearing snowshoes. The swimming complex in historic Ilmenau (15 minutes’ drive) has paddling pools and lounging areas, and is spot on for entertaining bored kids on any rainy days. However, this lively city rewards your attention for its beguiling combination of half-timbered, gabled and baroque-era architecture as well as fascinating displays in period rooms at the GoetheStadtMuseum. There’s more on the great man himself at the Museum Goethehaus at Stützerbach (10 minutes), a pretty pastel-coloured spa town tucked into alpine landscapes, where you can take the therapeutic waters in the Kurpark.
