Nature, rest and recreation are what's in store at Campingplatz Am Waldbad, a peaceful and well-maintained campsite just outside the village of Breitenbach in southern Thuringia. Guests staying at this relaxing site, which is surrounded by lush forest and green fields, will find themselves far from loud, noisy roads and pollution in a real wildlife haven. The village is best known as the gateway to the Thüringer Wald, a UNESCO-listed 17,000-hectare biosphere reserve that makes a fabulous location for walks and bike rides on well-marked trails running through the forests of the low mountain range. Families will find that they're very welcome at this site, as there are several facilities that are great for kids, including an outdoor swimming pool, a play area and a small petting zoo where they can spend some quality time with the cuddly animals. Campingplatz Am Waldbad also provides good practical amenities, including toilets, warm showers, a washing-up area and a washing machine. Both campfires and barbecues are allowed here, but if you fancy heading out for a meal instead you can wander down to one of the three restaurants in Breitenbach. To stock up on supplies at a local supermarket or to dine out at a wider range of eateries, you can also easily head into Schleusingen, a larger town 10 minutes away by car.

Liked Nice and peaceful, not too busy. There’s a shopping centre about an 8-minute drive away if you need anything. The campsite is easy to find, and there is food and drink available on site. There aren’t many choices, but what’s available is quite good. Overall, a very nice place to camp.

Liked Peace and quiet, that’s what we got.

The site is a beautiful gem in the hills bordering a huge forrest.
The facilities are a bit sober but more than sufficient.

The owner serves honest food for an honest price if you want.
There’s freshly baked bread to get in the morning if you wish, there’s an opportunity to swim… villages at 10 minutes driving for shopping, restaurants etc.
Aldo, there’s all kinds of historic sights and places to visit.
You can hike, bike, drive through nature…
Well, you get the point.

In my opinion it’s not a camping for young adults or for people with adolescent kids. It’s perfect though if you need peace and quiet and to come to yourself.

The owner is a fair, honest and direct gentleman.


I recommend this camping.

Ps all pics are taken within fives minutes of walking from our caravan.

Local attractions

Your first outing should certainly be into the Thüringer Wald – you can walk or bike there easily from the site to pick up marked trails through forest and up hills, taking in rivers, waterfalls and lots of green views along the way. For other ways to stretch your legs, there are several towns and cities that are well worth wandering around. Coburg (half an hour’s drive) is a good place to start, for the steep walk up to the medieval Veste Coburg fortress. The historic centre of Bamberg (an hour) is another good choice, as is Weimar (an hour and 15 minutes), where you can take a stroll around museums dedicated to Goethe and Schiller. Travelling families with kids to entertain may like to look instead towards Suhl (25 minutes), which has a zoo and a bowling alley, or plan a day out among the rides, adventure playgrounds and fairytale-themed attractions at Erlebnispark Schloss Thurn (an hour and 15 minutes). Or how about a real-life castle? Schloss Bertholdsburg is only 10 minutes’ drive away…
