Relocate your inner child with adventurous stays at Kulturinsel Einsiedel, a family-friendly site in the grounds of Die Geheime Welt von Turisede theme park, 20 minutes’ drive from the town of Görlitz and close to the Polish border in eastern Germany. The park straddles the Germany-Poland border, and there’s plenty here for inquisitive kids (and grownups who want a return to childhood) to explore, from underground labyrinths and growing mazes, to mythical and mystical creatures, to bizarre treehouses and a wooded petting zoo – plus, there’s a kid-approved spa with giant cauldrons and a sauna… Time stays right to see spring rituals of planting, autumn rituals of burning worries away with the goblins, and the annual Folklorum festival (Germany’s second biggest folk festival) in September – and make sure to spend at least one evening taking in dinner theatre and having a few drinks in the bar. Daytime hunger can be satisfied at one of the many restaurants, cafés and outdoor eating spots dotted around the park. There’s obviously lots on site to keep the whole family entertained, but if a change of scenery is called for, head into Görlitz to sample the local beers and eats on a tour of the Landskron brewery, visit the museums that explore the history of the town and its mining past, and swing along to the zoo and Tibetan village.

Powered grass campsite

Local attractions

Kids riding high on theme park excitement may want to keep the good times rolling with a visit to Miniaturenpark Kleinwelka (who wouldn’t want to feel like a giant?) or by following in the footsteps of dinosaurs at Saurierpark, both a 35-minute drive away in Kleinwelka. It’s not all about the kids of course… St Marienthal Abbey is 45 minutes away and is a must-visit for tours, spiritual retreats and e-bike rental (the rural area around it is well worth an explore), and the Zittau mountains are an hour from base if peace-filled days – while walking, hiking or biking – more appeal. Guests have a choice of sizeable towns to visit hereabouts too, as Bautzen and Bad Muskau are both within 40 minutes. The former has museums and galleries, a castle, and its very own leaning tower (not quite as famous as its Italian cousin), while the latter – a spa town – has a castle, gardens, museums and an animal park. Fancy picking up some souvenirs before heading home? The pretty village of Erlichthof Rietschen – built in the style of a typical 19th-century heath village – is 25 minutes away with museums and workshops, and is a top spot for nabbing artisan products too.
