It's free, quick and easy!
- Family-friendly site in the Münster countryside with a swimming lake
- A 10-minute drive from Versmold and 20 from Warendorf old town
- Fishing, cycle hire, play area, tennis facilities and a TV room
Hunker down on Camping Heidekamp’s sandy lake beach to balance a break spent Nordic walking and cycling in Münster, a relatively flat region with a massive 4,500 kilometres’ worth of bike paths, with a healthy dose of R&R.
In fact, there’s plenty of scope for family-friendly chillouts on and off-site hereabouts in between all those hardy hikes and bike rides – a woodland’s easy to reach for leafy strolls, fishing’s available at the park’s pond, and guests can give golf (or miniature golf) a go at a couple of courses minutes away by car.
And if you’re seriously seeking some respite? A complex of popular thermal baths – the carpesol Bad Rothenfelde Sole SPA Therme – is 25 minutes’ drive away.
To up the pace back at the site, a tennis court is open for family games of singles or doubles and a spacious playground’s set up for the kids as well.
Refuel after all the excitement with grub grabbed from the shops in Versmold, the nearest urban centre (a 10-minute drive away); barbecues and campfires are allowed at the park – pick up wood from staff to get your blaze burning – and dogs and other animals are welcome, too.

Local attractions
To tee up, totter over to Golfpark Heidewald (15 minutes’ drive), or go for an easier round at Minigolfplatz, a miniature golf complex 20 minutes away. For culture instead of clip-clopping across the green with your clubs, Warendorf old town (20 minutes) has a preserved medieval centre worth a wander around. Its surrounds are also a hotspot for horse riding if you’d like to hoof it about the area aboard a beast of burden.
To ride on a boat instead, trips along the Dortmund-Ems Canal (40 minutes) are a restful way to spend an afternoon. Rather get in the water than bob about on its surface? The Bad Rothenfelde Sole SPA Therme thermal baths (25 minutes) are just the spot for sitting and soaking in the soothing heat.
Seek out the local scenery at the fab Baumwipfelpfad Bad Iburg nature park (30 minutes), where you can learn a little about woodland life in the museum before setting out on forest trails, climbing up to an elevated pathway for a walk among the treetops or taking the lift up to the lookout tower to see the landscape from above.
To blend a bit of history into your trip, set off for Nordkirchen Castle (an hour and five minutes) to peer in awe at the biggest moated castle in the Westphalia region.
