Set on a hillside near Bockenem, Wohnmobil- und Campingpark Ambergau has spectacular forest views from all its pitches and is a springboard to hiking and cycling trips into the wild Ambergau foothills near Hildesheim (there's masses of information about the area in reception if you need route inspiration).
Family-friendly things to keep everyone occupied on site include wearing youngsters out on the playground slides, or making new pals over lively games of badminton and table tennis. You can have a runaround on the basketball and volleyball courts and then cool down on warmer days by jumping into the small swimming pond, which is continuously supplied with fresh spring water.
Your canine chums are welcome to accompany you on holiday too, as they can have a good old runaround in the safely enclosed dedicated dog park.
Breakfasts on site are all taken care of; a daily morning bread service of freshly baked rolls, croissants and pastries can be ordered from reception by 5pm the previous evening. On the practical side, handy facilities include a spotless amenities block with modern showers and toilets, a washing machine and a dryer (both available for a fee), and recycling amenities.
And if you’re driving a long distance, an automated 24-hour check-in system means you don’t have to fret about arrival times – and you shouldn't stress about getting lost either, as the site is only 10 minutes’ drive from the A7 motorway.

Reception staff at Wohnmobil- und Campingpark Ambergau can help organise bicycle and hiking tours of the Ambergau region, or you can find your own trails in the Sofaklippen (15 minutes’ drive), amid lakeside scenery and bizarre rock formations.
If you’re holidaying with the kids, there are swan boat rides, zip wires and a petting farm at Familienpark Sottrum (10 minutes), and vintage trains on a disused railway line at Museumsbahnbetrieb Almetalbahn (20 minutes). If you need something to do on a rainy day, head to Wasserparadies Hildesheim (half an hour) to whizz down the waterslides.
In fact, the historic town of Hildesheim is worth a visit no matter what the weather is doing, with its mix of lovely churches plus half-timbered, gabled houses around a massive cobbled square lined with terrace cafés. Other cultural days out to consider include Brunswick (40 minutes), with a city centre awash with magnificent churches and palaces, and Klosterpark (20 minutes), which has a stately baroque-era monastery and lakeside churches to explore.
