A quiet rural spot to lay your head. Excellent Bavarian dishes available right next to your pitch. Liking the sound of that? You should be thinking seriously about booking a stay at Zur Burgschänke Friedrichsthal, a small family-run site in the middle of Ansbach countryside with grass touring pitches, a restaurant and beer garden. The camping meadow is predominantly flat, with no set pitches so you can settle down in your favourite spot. Views extend over lovely countryside to the edge of the forest – gateway to scenic Bavarian hiking and cycling jaunts, and as there’s no light pollution, at night the skies dance with a starry display. There’s no need to fret about catering matters at all when you stay here, as there’s a breakfast service available – just be sure to put your order in the night before. The traditional tavern serves hearty local dishes and on warmer days there’s no better place to be than the romantic beer garden – both are open all day. Dogs are very welcome on your Bavarian getaway; the owners just ask that they stay on a leash around the site, and that the field be kept clean of waste for other campers.

Liked: Rust en uitzicht is echt bijzonder op deze camping. Mooie fiets en wandelmogelijkheden vlakbij de camping. Ook het restaurant nabij de camperplaats serveert een kleine kaart maar goed en redelijk geprijsd.

Disliked: De faciliteiten en de gebouwen ogen op het eerste gezicht rommelig en slecht onderhouden. Maar als je daar doorheen kunt kijken een prachtige plek!

Liked: Very warm welcome from Manfred who helped us park up and settle in, added bonus was the bar and excellent food that ended a long days driving. Very friendly atmosphere.

Disliked: Didn’t use the toilet block used our own out of convenience, they did look a bit dated but others staying had no complaints

Disliked: As a solo female traveller I wouldn’t recommend, I’m sure it is fine in a group but I didn’t feel completely safe alone. Toilet facilities are not good.

From the manager: Ich find diese Bewertung ungerecht, sie sind einfach weiter gefahren sie haben hier nicht übernachtet und haben alles nur überflogen es waren vielleicht 15 Minuten In denen sie hier waren.
Ich verstehe sie nicht Wir haben genau beschrieben wo wir wohnen, es ist bekannt dass hier nur Wald und Feld um uns ist. Menschen gibt es hier nur 27 die wohnen hier und als sie angereist sind, waren keine Camper da sie waren alleine auf dem Platz wenn sie angst haben warum reisen sie dann alleine? Warum buchen sie dann so einen Platz? Und warum bewerten Sie uns wenn Sie nicht mal übernachtet haben weil sie Angst haben? Vor was? Vor wem? Ich muss das nicht verstehen wir sind ein ganz einfacher naturnaher Stellplatz, unsere Sanitäranlagen sind auch einfach deshalb kostet der Platz nur 15€. Ja wir sind dabei diese zu Sanieren aber dafür benötigt man Zeit und Geld und dass ist in unserer Wirtschaftlichen Lage in Deutschland gerade nicht einfach? Wir lieben die Natur, deshalb haben wir dieses Objekt gekauft wir wollen kein Licht und auch kein Beton denn das ist unser Garten wir wünschen uns dass die Menschen die so denken und auch die Natur lieben den Sternenhimmel und die Milchstraße mit bloßem Auge betrachten können und dieses würdigen diese Menschen uns gerne besuchen. Wir lieben die Zirpen und das Froschkonzert das Abends beginnt und die Vögel die von Morgens bis abends singen. Wir lieben dass bellen der rege und die Uhus in der Nacht. Dass ist der Grund warum wir so einfach sind. Damit wir dass alles genießen können und auch diese mit unseren Gästen Abends mit einem Bier oder Wein und einem guten Essen genießen können. Also wenn das nicht Ihr Ding ist dann buchen Sie wo anders.

Liked: First impressions - Hmm, did we really book here! Ignore the field and shed. The owner and his wife were very friendly and so welcoming despite a language barrier. The site "Seems" to be owned the the village pub and that's where we ate and drank til long after hours. Food was generally local "Pub" food but delicious, hot and plentiful.

Disliked: Actually, despite the initial thoughts all was great and nothing to really dislike as long as you know you've booked a "field pitch" only (with electric).

Local attractions

Walkers can set out on the photogenic, long-distance Altmühltal Panorama Trail (20 minutes’s drive) along the Altmühl River through gorgeous countryside scattered with bizarre rock formations. Wait for a clear day to hike up the slopes of Hesselberg (15 minutes); from the top you can sometimes spot the Alps, over 90 miles away. Visit the cute town of Dinkelsbühl (20 minutes) to check out the coloured, gabled houses in its historic centre, or travel back in time to see how ancient Roman soldiers lived at LIMESEUM and Römerpark Ruffenhofen (also 20 minutes), which has a scale model of a wooden fort and artefacts found locally in an interactive museum. Kids with you? Introduce them to the history of Bavaria at Altmühltal Valley Archaeological Park (20 minutes), an open-air museum bringing the region’s history to life using reconstructed Celtic settlements and wooden farmhouses. When they’ve had enough of culture, make for the sandy lakeside beach at Seezentrum Wald Altmühlsee (also 20 minutes), or take them to Wille Kinderzoo (15 minutes) to feed the elephants and cuddle the miniature ponies.
