- Family-friendly site in the Rhône, a 10-minute drive from Panissières
- Rhône wineries 25 minutes’ drive; Lyon 50 minutes
- Dogs welcome; on the long-distance GR7 hiking trail
A little frazzled from months of commuting and/or ferrying the kids around all the time? It's time to leave all those stressy thoughts behind and embrace the peaceful vibe at Chez Cin Azole, a remote spot in the Rhone region, close to the border with the Loire.
Sitting in the gorgeous Monts du Lyonnais hills, the site (which welcomes both children and dogs) is easily accessed from the A89 motorway (about 15 minutes’ drive away). The nearby village of Villechenève (five minutes, or a 15-minute walk) has a bakery, a small shop and a community café, plus a well-rated restaurant serving traditional and local recipes. There are many more restaurants within a 10-minute drive of the site, including in the small town of Panissières.
All this talk of food… and nothing to wash it down with? Well, that's easily sorted: you’re in the Rhone here, after all, and you have your pick of wineries about a half-hour drive to the east, on the left bank of the river Saône.
Appetite sated and thirst quenched, it’s time to burn a few calories. The long-distance GR7 hiking trail, which links the Vosges mountains to the Pyrenees, passes right by the site. Follow it north to Tour Matagrin (an hour on foot) or south to the viewpoint at Col de la Croix du Fol (an hour and a half). Alternatively, drive the 20 minutes up to Saint Cyr de Valorges for forested walks and a fishing pond.
Back on site, you'll have access to simple facilities in the form of toilets, showers and a washing-up area, and you'll be staying on pitches spacious enough for an awning or gazebo if you like.

Local attractions
When you’re not out and about hiking through the local landscapes, you may like to take a gentle stroll through Le Jardin des Plantes à Couleurs (15 minutes’ drive), a botanic garden dedicated to colourful plants that produce natural dyes. Alternatively, maybe take a guided tour of Château de Chamousset (15 minutes), taking in the grand rooms, the orangeries and the ‘corridor of curiosities’.
For those with kids to entertain, Les Lamas et Alpagas de Lafayette (10 minutes) is a good place to start, with numerous friendly animals to meet. Aquatic Center Escap’ad (15 minutes) is another top choice, with waterslides and water play areas, plus bowling for cooler days.
The big day out around here is surely a trip to Lyon (50 minutes) – it’s known as a foodie haunt these days, and you can intersperse tasty treats with visits to places like the Théâtre Gallo Romain, Musée Miniature et Cinéma and Musée des Beaux-Arts or just strolls around the UNESCO-listed Vieux Lyon area.
