Spend a hol lingering at Lake Leman, taking in some fine views of the French Alps, with a stay at Camping La Pourvoirie des Ellandes – this one-hectare site is a serene spot less than 10 minutes' walk from the lake's Plage d'Excenevex, the only natural sandy beach in the Haute-Savoie department’s UNESCO-registered Chablais Geopark. Grappling with tent construction won’t eat into your travel time at this site – all accommodation’s static, so everything will be ready as soon as you turn up, meaning you can drop your bags off and start checking out the facilities right away. View pics and you’ll see there’s space for the kids to play badminton and volleyball on the grass, with table tennis and table football for organised games as well. Bound over to the beach for outdoor activities like sailing, pedal boating, kitesurfing, rafting and diving; in the mountains to the south, it’s all about the hiking trails, paragliding trips and marked via ferrata climbing routes. For gentler activities, bikes are available to rent back on base – ask staff for a map of the local cycling routes or just start pedalling for a mosey around the lake. On jaunts by car around the shores, stop by spa villages like Evian-les-Bains (25 minutes’ drive) and Thonon-les-Bains (20 minutes) for top-notch views out over the water, or cross the border and visit the stunning Swiss capital city of Geneva (40 minutes). The environment’s lush around Camping La Pourvoirie des Ellandes and the team want to keep it this way, so they've set up recycling and composting facilities on site. Barbecues and picnic tables are dotted around the grounds for alfresco mealtimes and a supermarket’s a short stroll down the road.

Local attractions

Adventures are varied in this part of the Haute-Savoie. Tootle off to The Garden of The Five Senses, just over a five-minute drive away through the medieval village of Yvoire, for a gander at gorgeous greenery, then witness nature at its most dramatic at Les Gorges du Pont du Diable (half an hour) on a forest walk leading to a ravine sliced through by a bright blue river. Stick with the aquatic theme for explores at Évian-les-Bains – yep, the place where the famed bottled water comes from – and plonk yourself in the town’s spa baths for a serene stint. Inland, Alpine ski resorts like Morzine (50 minutes) are littered with forest-shrouded slopes with bike lifts and trails for summertime trips, while cultural expeditions close by include guided tours of Château de Ripaille (20 minutes), taking in the monastery, castle and vineyard.
