- Family-friendly site 10 minutes' walk from Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux
- Half an hour's drive from the Gorges de l'Ardèche
- Nature trails, crafts and games for kids in summer holidays
Best be asking the boss for as lengthy a hol as poss – because oh, what a lot there is to do around Camping de la Colline.
Just outside the small town of Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux (and thus also handily 10 minutes’ walk from shops, restaurants and the like), this is a nifty location for days spent roaming around the many attractions of the surrounding Drôme, Ardèche, Gard and Vaucluse regions – for starters, think canoe trips, treetop adventures, châteaux, a troglodyte village, vineyards, snuffling out truffles in local markets…
Lovely landscapes are all around too, with plenty of marked hiking and mountain bike trails starting close to the site and wandering through lavender fields, forests and olive groves to take in local villages and gorgeous vistas.
Knowing that nippers often don’t cope too well with lengthy hikes, the folks on site organise other ways to spark their interest in nature: summer activities include insect safaris and flower workshops as well as family-friendly games and crafts. All sounding like rather too much activity? Make time for a lazy afternoon by the pool, perhaps involving a shaded spot for a snooze and trips to the snack bar for ice cream and easy eats from the menu of pizzas, burgers and salads.

Local attractions
How many castles do you reckon there are in Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux? That’s right, none at all. It’s still worth having a wander around the town though, to visit the cathedral and archaeology museum and seek out local truffles in the markets and shops. If you fancy wandering a bit further, the town’s mountain bike base has 14 waymarked routes and there are lots of local walking paths too.
No need to feel too château-deprived, however: Château de Grignan and Château de Suze-la-Rousse can both be reached with a drive of 20 minutes or so, and there’s much historic architecture to be seen on a wander through the city of Avignon, 45 minutes away.
For more active days, head to the Gorges de l’Ardèche, half an hour away, for canoe trips, or to the forest at Saint-Remèze to climb up to the treetop trails. Other kid-friendly outings nearby include the Crocodile Farm at Pierrelatte, the troglodyte village at Barry and the sweet museum in Montélimar – all are within half an hour’s drive.
