  • Quiet family-friendly Royans-Vercors site overlooking the Lyonne river
  • Combe Laval 10 minutes’ drive and Chambaran Natural Park 45 minutes
  • Mountain views and free local market tours; snack bar and mini farm
Tucked among greenery with a backdrop of rugged peaks in Royans-Vercors, peaceful Camping Les Bords de Lyonne sits on the banks of the Lyonne river five minutes’ drive from Saint-Jean-en-Royans. This relaxed and welcoming family-friendly site is a simple spot in which to recharge your batteries and give the kids a quiet break among untamed nature. Spacious pitches sit under the trees and have direct access to the riverbank, where you can spend afternoons reading in the shade or play games in the water with the family. Other facilities available on site include a playground, pétanque court and ping-pong table, as well as a mini farm with cuddly animals to pat and feed, which is sure to be a hit with younger guests. There’s also a municipal swimming pool with a waterslide just next door (charges apply). Catering basics are provided too, in the shape of bread and pastries for breakfast as well as simple but tasty dishes in the snack bar, which also does a good line in local ice creams and waffles to keep the children happy (and the adults too, to be fair…). Washing machines and irons are available, and other amenities include rent of gear like sheets, fridges and barbecues. Occasional on-site cultural events are organised throughout the summer, and you can also join free guided tours around local artisan markets.

Local attractions

Wild swimming, hiking routes and mountain biking trails are all available directly from the pitches; one of the biggest challenges in the region is the steep ascent up Combe Laval (10 minutes’ drive) on a winding road carved into and around the cliffside. The summit of this engineering masterpiece will reward you with staggering views across the Vercors mountain range. If that’s a bit too hardcore for the kids, try paddleboarding down the Isère river from Saint-Nazaire-en-Royans (15 minutes), or head for the waymarked trails in Chambaran Natural Park (45 minutes) to possibly catch sight of grazing fallow deer and hear the occasional wild boar grunting in the forest. Your offspring will probably also be keen to try the zipwires and rope courses at Parc Oasis Aventura (50 minutes). There’s more outdoor adventure to be had throughout the Vercors Regional Natural Park (surrounding the site), where you can explore the underground lake at Grotte de Thaïs (15 minutes) by boat. Another unusual local treat is the Jardin des Fontaines Pétrifiantes (15 minutes), with walkways past moss-covered cliffs, water features and tropical plantings.
