It's free, quick and easy!
- On the banks of the Ardèche river, 10 minutes' drive from Sampzon
- Half an hour's drive from Gorges de l'Ardèche; 15 mins from Pont d'Arc
- Private beach, canoe hire, swimming pool and lots of summer activities
If it’s a riverside Rhône-Alpes stay you’ve got your eye on, you could hardly get closer to the Ardèche than Camping Le Riviera, a place bang on the banks of the mighty river 10 minutes’ drive from Sampzon.
The river’s a pleasing sight to behold, of course, but if you’re not content to sit by and watch you’re welcome to get stuck in. There’s a private beach for freshwater dips and fishing (if you’re holding the correct permit), and you can hire canoes on site to launch on aquatic adventures (let the folk on site know how far you plan to paddle and they’ll send a shuttle bus to pick you up).
Prefer your swims in a more contained environment? Stroll to the site’s swimming pool area, which has a 200m² main pool with whirlpool bench, a paddling pool and plenty of loungers for the sun worshippers. It’s also the setting for high-season aqua gym classes and is open later for swims on summer Saturdays under the sunset and stars.
And there’s more evening entertainment beyond that… live music, various games and the like run throughout high season, as do daytime activities for both kids and grownups. Still not quite enough? Other facilities include an adventure playground, a multisports pitch and a pétanque court (floodlit in case you run out of time by day).
Fuel up for the day with fresh bread and croissants from the site shop; later in the day the bar-restaurant opens up for woodfired pizzas and other bits to eat in or take away.

Local attractions
The Ardèche area is a most scenic one for an outing – if you’re not sure where to start, sign up for a guided hike or mountain bike ride from the site, or aim for one of the big sights: the Cirque de Gens (10 minutes’ drive) or the ancient Païolive Wood (20 minutes), perhaps. Horse riding, golf and rock climbing are all within a 15-minute drive too, and the site runs a shuttle to the local adventure park in summer.
As natural sights go, they hardly come any bigger than the Gorges d’Ardèche (half an hour’s drive) – the ‘European Grand Canyon’ is a fab place for a hike, a scenic drive or (ideally) a canoe trip. A second canoe outing should certainly be scheduled at the huge Pont d’Arc stone arch – paddle there from the site or set sail from Vallon Pont d’Arc (10 minutes).
For a break from such activity, aim for the huge underground caves at Aven d’Orgnac (25 minutes), roam around pretty Ruoms (five minutes) or seek out a winery for tipple sampling – there are several within a drive of 20 minutes or so.
