  • Peaceful family site in the Monts d’Ardèche Regional Natural Park
  • Chassezac river gorge five minutes’ drive; Aven d’Orgnac 45 minutes
  • Snack bar and food shop open in season; private beach 10 minutes’ walk
Like the sound of easy access to two Rhônes-Alpes natural parks? That’s what you get at Camping Le Pradal, tucked under trees in the Monts d’Ardèche Regional Natural Park, and at the gateway to the Cévennes National Park. This is a quiet spot run by a welcoming farming family; there’s little to disturb the peace hereabouts so your stay will be lulled by the chirp of cicadas. You will have loads to do on this prettily landscaped site before you even think of venturing out to the site’s private beach (10 minutes’ walk) on the River Chassezac. Much of the action revolves around the swimming pool (it has a toddler pool too), and there’s also fitness equipment, a multi-sports ground, two pétanque courts and ping-pong tables. Younger kids also have the run of a small play area. In high season a terrace snack bar opens up for pizzas (takeaways are available too), and you can also buy local Ardèche produce like chestnuts and goat’s cheese on site. Otherwise, you have the use of a communal barbecue; stock up on foods to grill at the shops in the pretty village of Les Vans (five minutes’ drive). The green credentials are pretty high here, with solar LED lamps lighting the walkways and solar energy heating the water in the facilities blocks – there is also an accessible shower and loo for mobility-impaired guests.

Local attractions

Intrepid types can keep busy climbing, canoeing and kayaking through the spectacular Chassezac river gorge (five minutes’ drive), and there’s also a parasailing/paragliding take-off point within the same distance for fabulous bird’s-eye views over craggy Monts d’Ardèche Regional Natural Park. Those of a less sporty mindset might prefer to splash around on the beach at Vallon-Pont-d’Arc (35 minutes), with views of the natural arch spanning the Ardèche River. Nearby are several subterranean networks open for exploration; you can see copies of prehistoric cave drawings at Grotte Chauvet 2 - Ardèche (40 minutes), and tour the limestone formations deep underground at Aven d’Orgnac (45 minutes).
If pretty villages are on your sightseeing schedule, Naves (five minutes) in the Cévennes foothills is packed with pink-stone medieval cottages, and you can laze away an hour or two in the leafy piazza at Banne (15 minutes), shaded by its landmark church.
