  • Surrounded by the Monts d'Ardèche next to a pretty, public lake
  • Direct access to more than 200 kilometres of hiking trails
  • Beachfront cocktail bar and Ardéchois restaurant serving local cuisine
Oh, it sure is a hard old life – lolling around on a lakeside beach, surrounded by the foothills and peaks of the Monts d'Ardèche Natural Regional Park while sipping on cocktails and chomping on chestnuts, artisanal goats' cheeses and charcuterie meats; the odds are pretty high that it won't be long before Camping Le Soleil Rouge has you calling yourself an 'Ardéchois' and planning a big move to France. Long days of luxuriating on the beach are insisted upon here, and word has it that you get extra points if you manage to keep a cocktail in hand at all times – which really won't be hard actually, because the park's snazzy little beachfront cocktail bar is on hand to serve you piña coladas and pop all day long (Tom Cruise not included). Swimming, canoeing and kayaking are popular at the lake, and its shallow waters – lifeguarded during the afternoons in July and August – provide a safe place for young kids to splosh around in; the site also has a nice little grassy play area that's surrounded safely by a fence to give you maximum peace of mind if ever the kids manage to tear themselves away from that lovely lake. Between bouts of bounding around in the water, rent yourself a mountain bike and ride out to a local village farmers' market to pick up some produce for beach picnics, or cycle into the foothills of the Ardèche for some proper challenging pedalling. Whenever you feel you'd rather stay at the park for the day you can pick up your supplies at the on-site shop, and there's always a good old fashioned game of tennis or (even more old fashioned, perhaps?) archery and rifle shooting to be had. Now, after all that activity you'll probably have worked up quite the appetite, so it's a very good job Le Soleil Rouge has a restaurant that serves traditional Ardéchois dishes and not-so local snacky eats such as homemade pizzas, American breads and fish and chips to sustain you throughout your days there. Oh, and the fresh-bread delivery service has got your breakfasts sorted too. Other handy amenities at La Soleil include a launderette and a free wifi service at certain points throughout the park, and you can load yourself up with tourist info leaflets galore at reception before heading out for your days of sightseeing.

Local attractions

The region's famed chestnuts, sweet blueberry-like myrtilles, goats' cheeses and artisanal charcuterie meats – all accompanied by a bottle of local wine, of course – usually go down pretty nicely while you're lazing down by the lake. Therefore, it's highly recommended that you fill your mornings picking up said supplies at the local farmers' markets, which take place in St Agrève on Mondays (15km), Lamastre on Tuesdays (6km), Wednesdays in Le Cheylard (20km), Vernoux-en-Vivarais on Thursdays (23km), and back again to Lamastre on Saturdays. For those who intend to stay at La Soleil over a weekend, aim to amble over to the village's 14th-century castle-museum (open Saturdays and Sundays between 2pm and 6pm), and pay a visit to the ruined villas, springs and thermal baths the Romans very kindly left behind there. Every week there's something going on somewhere around Désaignes – usually some sort of festival, because the local Ardéchois celebrate everything from baskets to raspberries and medieval times (why not?). For concerts, on Wednesdays there's one at the local temple and on Thursdays there's always something on over in Lamastre. If you're up for a little more action (but not too much), be sure to pack a good pair of walking shoes because the area is networked by more than 200 kilometres of waymarked walking trails that you can join right from or near La Soleil, including the flat 13.5-kilometre circuit that leads from the village cemetery through a lush private chestnut grove, onwards to the handsome hamlet of Sauteraux and then upwards for fab views of the Doux valley, all before you head back to base for a barbecue and a gentle game of pétanque.
