It's free, quick and easy!
- Site surrounded by woodland at the foot of the Estérel massif
- A 10-minute walk to Péguière beach; 10 minutes’ drive to Saint-Raphaël
- Swimming pool; watersports including kayaking available on the beach
Voyage to the Var department for an action-packed stay at Camping de l'Éléphant, a site that's highly suitable for either handy stopovers or lengthier stays. This spot’s in a wooded area at the foot of the Estérel massif and a 10-minute walk (via a footpath) from Plage de la Péguière beach on the outskirts of the Côte d'Azur seaside town of Saint-Raphaël.
Once you've wandered seawards, it's easy to ply plenty of pretty paths for hikes with views of the waves. But if you’d rather be in the sea than strolling by it…? Chat with site staff about places to kayak, waterski, fish, jetski and paddleboard (or get the lowdown on joining in with 4x4 rides and mountain biking trips in the Estérel mountains if you're not one for wallowing in water).
Speaking of dry land, the park’s in a calm residential part of Boulouris-sur-Mer, a village with a bakery, small shop and pharmacy, and a market that pops up on Mondays and Thursdays. A little further on is the Corniche d'Or road between Saint-Raphaël (10 minutes’ drive) and Cannes, one of the most stunning routes in the Alpes-Maritimes region with scenic cliffs and hidden coves sprinkled along the way.
As a bonus for parents, Camping de l'Éléphant has CCTV for safety and is pedestrianised so kids can roam free. Laundry facilities are available, too, to deal with any mucky mishaps they might have.

Local attractions
One of the closest beaches to the site is Fournas, a fine place for rockpooling five minutes’ drive away, and stretches of sand are to be visited around Saint-Raphaël (10 minutes). This seaside resort is dominated by the 19th-century Notre Dame de la Victorie Basilica, a religious monument made out of sandstone, and is also home to Bonaparte Garden with its views out over the bay.
To get down by the water after admiring it, head to Débarquement Beach, named after the Allied landings in World War II, which looks out towards the Île d'Or island, or catch a ferry from Saint-Raphaël towards the glitzy French Riviera towns of Cannes and Saint-Tropez and see how the other half lives. Both spots have sandy beaches and yacht-lined harbours to stroll along, as well as plenty of cocktail bars and restaurants serving classic French fodder.
Away from the coast – and the jet-set – the Estérel Massif is a hub for hikers. Head here for roams through protected oak forests and above deep ravines with soul-stirring views.
