Picture the scene: sitting in the dappled sunshine beneath the trees, a soft breeze blowing the leaves overhead as the sound of cicadas fills the air… bliss, non? If that's a resounding oui, make immediate tracks for Camping Les Tomasses, a family-friendly site half an hour's drive from Hyères. A leafy site on the banks of the Gapeau river, the site is well set up for quiet days of unwinding, as pitches are set in a wooded area, and a toddle as far as reception will satisfy bookish types who can pick up a tome before retreating to solitude in the shade of the trees. Craving something altogether busier? There’s plenty on site to keep active types busy: a swimming pool will see guests through warmer days (and the beaches of the Côte d’Azur are half an hour away if off-site days beckon), and high season days are easily filled with the kids’ club, games on the multisports field, visits to the miniature farm and lots of competitions. Foodies are well catered for as well: the bar and restaurant on site are open during high season for pizzas, snacks and traditional cuisine (plus fresh bread and pastries every morning). There are plenty of nearby markets too, so be sure to mooch along to one (or all) to sample local specialities like honey, tapenade, olive oil and figs.

Local attractions

The site’s in a prime spot for exploring the fab Côte d’Azur: glittering resorts including Cannes, Fréjus and Saint-Tropez are within an hour and a half's drive, and the scenic port cities of Nice and Marseilles (and the city-state of Monaco) are less than two hours away. For city days closer at hand, it’s just half an hour to Toulon, where there are museums and galleries, a fort to lay siege to, a casino for testing luck, and lots and lots of beaches. If you get all in a flap for les animaux, a bird park is on the outskirts of the city, and the Mont Faron zoo is 50 minutes from base (and about 25 minutes from the centre of Toulon). If proximity to Monaco is getting speed freaks all fired up, races and track days are less than half an hour from the site at Circuit Paul Ricard, and it’s 45 minutes in the car to zooming zippily down slides at Aqualand in Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer. History buffs after a more sedate pace might gravitate towards to the stunning Thoronet Abbey or the basilica in Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume (both within 45 minutes), but if a little anachronism is acceptable, the rides and shows at OK Corral are just half an hour from the site.
