  • Peaceful site in Saint-Etienne-du-Grès, a 25-minute drive from Arles
  • Alpilles Natural Regional Park five minutes’ drive; Nîmes 40 minutes
  • Bar and ice-cream kiosk; food shop; playground; shaded pétanque courts
A relaxing holiday in the south of France might be your original plan when you book a spot at Camping Porte des Alpilles, a peaceful, family-friendly site on the outskirts of the Provençal village of Saint-Etienne-du-Grès (five minutes’ drive or a 15-minute walk). However, when you see the numerous natural, historic and architectural highlights in the area, relaxing could become the last thing on your mind, as you draw up plans to go on epic hikes in the Alpilles Natural Regional Park (five minutes); catch a glimpse of wildlife in the Camargue Regional Nature Park (25 minutes); or visit the cities of Arles (25 minutes), Avignon (half an hour) or Nîmes (40 minutes). Of course, if you’re determined to do as little as possible while on holiday, this is also a pretty sweet spot, with pitches shaded by tall trees (the rustling of the leaves conducive to afternoon siestas), a communal barbecue area with plenty of picnic tables, a bar and an ice-cream kiosk. You don’t even have to venture out of the gate to buy a little something for your friends back home – there’s a souvenir store and a small food shop on site (you can also rent a fridge for any perishable purchases). Leisure facilities include shaded pétanque courts and a sheltered games area with a dartboard, table football and a small library, plus a children’s playground with swings and slides. The toilet block has facilities for the disabled, and there’s also a launderette with drying racks and ironing boards to borrow.

FHU grass campsite (comfort)

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Loved every thing about this site. The pitch was very private, in its own enclosure with hedges all around. The bathrooms were in immaculate condition. Very quiet area. We left very early and didn’t look around and didn’t need to drain our gray water etc. We didn’t check if there was any. Also, very reasonable price site

FHU grass campsite (comfort)

Liked Friendly welcome to well kept site. Able to choose pitch best suited to our unit and needs. Short walk to small town with a selection of food shops and a cafe. Easy to get cities for sightseeing and into the Alpilles for scenery and historic towns and villages. Wi-Fi excellent and free.

FHU grass campsite (comfort)

Liked A beautiful setting, perfectly located to explore the area. The owners are very friendly and helpful. Facilities are clean and well-maintained.

Disliked There was no clothes dryer, but we had warm weather, so it wasn't a problem.

It's a nice site but not if you intend to use public transport

Primitive grass campsite

Liked The girl at the desk was very friendly and really helpful. The pitch was good, nice and level, and we picked one close to the shower block. Facilities, showers and toilets, were clean and well looked after.

Disliked Same issue with cold showers, as seen in other reviews. Push button to make the showers work really didn't stay on long enough. We were visiting Avignon, so this location was too far out as no buses ran directly there, which was disappointing.

Liked Availability of late check in (very useful), handy location (and proximity to gorgeous Baux de Provence), friendly lady in reception. Bar looked like it would be great in high season.

Disliked Water in showers could be warmer.

Local attractions

Although Vincent van Gogh spent only about a year in Arles, he is inextricably linked with this pretty city on the Rhône river. The Van Gogh Route takes you to the main sights painted by the artist, from Place du Forum (site of his ‘Café Terrace at Night’) to the amphitheatre, which he depicted in ‘Arena at Arles’. The Palais des Papes in Avignon, a fortified Gothic palace where seven popes resided in the 14th century, has elegant chapels decorated with frescoes and pretty restored gardens with fountains. The Jardin des Doms is a hilltop park with an observation deck overlooking the Rhône. The Roman heritage of Nîmes is still visible in the Maison Carrée temple and the well-preserved amphitheatre, which instead of gladiatorial games now hosts live concerts. Spectacular Roman mosaics can be seen in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, alongside a collection of paintings, sculpture and decorative arts.
