One of the largest canyons in Europe is calling – and so is Domaine du Petit Lac, a family site at just 20 minutes’ drive away from the aforementioned canyon Gorges du Verdon.
The river canyon isn’t the only simply spectacular Alpes-de-Haute-Provence landscape nearby. Dog-friendly Domaine du Petit Lac is based 15 minutes’ walk away from the Lake of Sainte-Croix, a striking blue lake that's France’s third-largest.
Kids are very welcome at this site – there’s very much a family atmosphere, with a designated pedestrian area and a natural bathing area measuring 1000 square metres supervised and open six days per week in July and August. There are no kids’ clubs or over-the-top entertainment, but instead well-designed spaces and simple family entertainment in the form of giant wooden games, concerts or dance evenings held three times per week in the summer.
Don’t feel like cooking? There’s also a restaurant, bar and pizzeria with a view of the lake on site. Let the cook do the honours of prepping you some simple homemade food fashioned from the local produce: breakfast, lunch, snack, aperitif, dinner are all no bother, and feel free to invite your friends. The village of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie is only five minutes’ drive away, with eateries; the site rents bicycles if you need them. A fruit and vegetable merchant is on site three days per week in the summer season.
Guests of a sporty disposition can visit the site’s volleyball, beach volleyball and tennis courts for friendly tournaments. There are ping pong tables, bowling alleys and a miniature golf course on site, as well as a small convenience store selling items like postcards and sunscreen (open during reception hours).
Other facilities at your disposal include wifi, laundry (with both washing machines and dryers, operated by tokens from reception), linen rental (for sheets and towels), board games, books, an iron and hireable cots, high chairs and baths for babies.

Local attractions
The Verdon region is very much conducive to the outdoorsy sorts of activities: stuff like hiking, whitewater sports, climbing, canyoning, mountain biking and paragliding. If you’re of a lazier disposition, however, don’t fret. Fishing, boating and relaxing are some of the main focuses at the Lake of Sainte-Croix (from 15 minutes’ walk). Around the lake are many more-or-less secret spots, accessible on foot or by bicycle.
For pretty pictures packed with purple flowers, there are lavender fields within 25 minutes’ drive of the site. Take a drive to Sainte-Croix-du-Verdon (25 minutes’ drive) for a pretty 16th-century village along the lake; further on is Pont de Sainte-Croix (half an hour), the lake’s famed bridge.

Primitive grass campsite
Liked: Friendly reception, and was given choice of tent pitches (great to be able to chose a shaded one!).
Shower block/toilets are very clean.
Peaceful site, with lovely views around le petit lac.
Great location for exploring the Verdon Gorges area.
