  • On the Route Napoléon, just outside the lavender village of Barrême
  • Valensole Plateau and Gorges du Verdon within an hour's drive
  • Swimming pool, pétanque, snack bar and river swims on site
Bleu, you say? Mais oui… Camping l’Or Bleu is in a part of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur that’s well known for its lavender fields that burst into shades of blues and purples every summer. To those shades of blue you may also be able to add some clear blue skies (fingers crossed for good weather) and the turquoise waters of the Gorges du Verdon and Sainte-Croix Lake – both of which are close by in the Verdon Regional Natural Park. Getting out to see those places (and the greens of the Mercantour National Park too) is straightforward, as this nifty site is just off the RN85 – aka Route Napoléon – for easy travels around the area. Also handy here is the village of Barrême, which is 10 minutes’ walk away for shops, bars and places to eat (and a museum that’ll give you an insight into the world of lavender farming). The folk here haven’t just relied on the location to make it a desirable place to stay, though – they’ve also set up a good stack of facilities including a swimming pool, a pétanque court, a playground and a snack bar to keep you amused, fed and watered in between outings. There’s also a peaceful stretch of river running just past the site, so you can cool off down there if you prefer to take your dips in fresh water.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked Very friendly owners and they are clearly trying to make amenities on the site - pool, bar, play area for kids, toy zoo with goats. Washing/cleaning facilities were decent and very clean. On the Route Napoleon from Grenoble to Golfe Juan, with some spectacular scenery getting there. Scenic countryside around.

Disliked The river didn't appear swimmable - a fast shallow stream over rocks in early September after a dry summer. The site looks a bit shabby with lots of unattractive chalets, although the pitch sizes were generous. The bar didn't seem to be open when we were there. Barreme itself is a bit empty and tired, with nothing other than a lavender distillery museum, an empty train station and three pizza outlets. Although it had some 'old town' charm wandering around at night.

Clean and tidy facilities. Friendly and helpful staff.…

Power optional grass campsite

Liked Typical French campsite. Can’t knock facilities- toilet and shower block was clean and plenty of space. Hand washing available, bar/ restaurant on site, pool and kids play area. Pitch had some shade via trees which was very welcoming in the August heat.

Disliked Limited English spoken so once we managed to check in there was no communication.

Local attractions

Barrême’s a fab spot to hang out in for the many outdoorsy activities available around the area – the team on site can point you in the right direction for paragliding, fishing, rafting, bike routes and lots of lovely hikes (perhaps among the lakes, forests and peaks of the Mercantour National Park, an hour’s drive away). For the very best of those lavender views, venture to the Valensole Plateau (50 minutes’ drive) for fields full of the fragrant flowers. If you’re more into the blues of natural waters, get set for watersports at Sainte-Croix Lake or kayak and rafting trips through the Gorges du Verdon. Both are about an hour away by car, with views to be had while hiking/biking/driving if you don’t fancy taking to the water. Slowing the pace is simple, too – take wanders around the gardens and Gassendi museum in Digne-les-Bains (half an hour’s drive) before settling in for a spa soak, or stop by in Castellane (half an hour), Annot (45 minutes) and Entrevaux (50 minutes) for pretty strolls.
