Plenty of space
Large caravan

  • Peaceful riverside site just outside Saint-Pierre-de-Maillé
  • A 20-minute drive from the thermal spas of La Roche-Posay
  • Bike and canoe rental available on site
If you’re one of those (sensible) types who fancies a peaceful rural retreat but still wants to be within easy ambling distance of restaurants, shops and the like, sort yourself a stay at Vienne's Camping Le Grand Pré. The peace and quiet part of the equation comes to you courtesy of the setting, between ancient cliffs and the Gartempe river; meanwhile, a 10-minute stroll from the site is the little village of Saint-Pierre-de-Maillé, home to a restaurant, café and grocery store plus the obligatory bakery. Should you require further urban amenities, there are more restaurants (along with some scenic woods and river views) in Angles-sur-l’Anglin, 10 minutes away by car. A bit further afield, it's around 20 minutes' drive to historic wanderings through the medieval streets of Chauvigny or warm-water wallowing at the famed thermal baths in La Roche-Posay. Or get prepped to get climbing: Le Grand Pré is 10 minutes' drive from the popular rock climbing site of La Guignoterie. Facilities on site are kept to a minimum to maintain the peaceful vibe, but there's plenty of space for the small sorts to run about, and various useful amenities to make life easy: bike hire, canoe hire, a barbecue area and a small shop.

Power optional grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked On arrival you are greeted by a very warm and welcoming couple, Patrick and Linda.
And from that moment on, they simply cannot do enough to please you.

The site is ideally situated and has lots of character. The pitches are a perfect mixture, for motorhomes, caravans and tents alike. Very generous spaces, strategically positioned trees for that ever so needed shade.

You are a short walk from the charming town and the services it offers.
The toilets, showers and facilities are basic, but very clean and regularly checked.

Breads etc, are offered for morning collection from reception as well as many basic, simple requirements, for that just in case need.
In the corner of the site, you can hire kayaks and enjoy an hour, half a day, or a full day on the river.

All in all a truly lovely site that seems to hypnotise you into relaxing and enjoying what French camping is all about.

Disliked There is nothing to truly dislike.

Power optional grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Picturesque and spacious camp site nestled beneath aromatic pine trees and bound by white limestone rocky outcrops and the lovely river Loire. Host was really friendly and helpful. A decent selection of locally-brewed beers available.

Local attractions

Get out and explore by hiring a bike or canoe from the site; friendly reception staff can also give you details of hikes both gentle and strenuous. There are some comely little fishing spots along the Gartempe river and the nearby Anglin, and more than 100 routes for experienced climbers along the limestone cliffs around Saint-Pierre-de-Maillé. Drive up to Angles-sur-l’Anglin (10 minutes), to potter about in the pretty village and to wander around the ruins of its hilltop fortress and see the prehistoric carvings in the Roc-aux-Sorciers cave. If you’re partial to a castle or two, fit in a trip to Chauvigny, where there are five to pick from (or visit them all on a castle crawl). La Roche-Posay, a 20-minute drive from the site, is the place to visit for a golf course, horse racing and thermal spa sessions. Even if you’re not actually heading into the baths, the Parc Thermal is a handsome place to wander around, with its gardens divided into themed areas. If the kids demand to up the adrenaline levels somewhat, the fab Futuroscope theme park is 45 minutes’ drive away.
