Local attractions
Oléron is an utterly fab place to stay on a French hol, and is the second biggest island of Metropolitan France, after Corsica, so you'll find heaps to do whatever way your tastes lie. Hire a bike from the Camping Les Grosses Pierres team to pedal around the 110 or so kilometres of peaceful bike paths; go surfing or horse riding; sample oysters at the seafood restaurants, buy freshly landed fish at the famed village of La Cotiniere...
Within easy reach for day trips are La Rochelle and its aquarium, the Luna Park theme park, the large waterpark at Iléo, and La Palmyre Zoo in Royan, a green pine forest with big cats, apes, and penguins.
You could also visit the island of Aix, take a boat tour around famed Fort Boyard, potter around the 17th-century fort (and now an oyster museum) of Fort Louvois, or make it your mission to get to Oléron's city and its many castles.
