  • Family-friendly site with pools, waterslide and bike hire
  • Luna Park fairground, zoo, quad biking and beach within 15 minutes
  • Bar and restaurant with music and dancing; bakery and grocery
Forgot your bike? Never fear, the friendly folk at Camping Côté Ô La Palmyre Quartier Privilège have many two-wheeled chargers for hire… so you and the family can charge off through the fab coastal countryside of the Poitou-Charente region, exploring pine forests, dunes and salt marshes by pedal power. And what every cyclist needs of course after long days biking up and down France’s Atlantic coast? A refreshing dip, that's what… and that can be done in grand style on this site, as there’s a pair of pools (indoor and outdoor) plus a very long and twisty slide to make that first splash. Walking and cycling routes towards the sea, to the harbour town of Royan (half an hour’s drive) and through the Saint-Augustin-les-Mathes forest start right from the site. Should you fancy staying put, you can still keep the energy levels high with table tennis and beach volleyball, or take the tempo down a bit with pony rides or a sedate game of pétanque. You don't need to leave base for the shops, as there's a bakery and grocery on site, as well as a restaurant serving light meals and snacks, pizzas and traditional dishes. Once you're refuelled, boogie your way over the bar, where music and dancing get going after sunset.

Local attractions

With such a fine setup back at base, you might be reluctant to stray far. Staying close to home, you could bike over to Luna Park in a couple of minutes for fairground rides, rollercoasters and firework shows, or make a 20-minute cycle ride (10 minutes by car) through the forest to Zoo La Palmyre to meet the resident monkeys, rhinos and reptiles. If you’re after faster speeds on land or water, it’s a 10-minute walk to the headquarters of a local jetskiing company, for four-wheeled dirt and mud trails on land as well as and jetski japes on the waves. There’s a slower pace of life on the islands: try walking or cycling through the marsh and dune nature reserves on Île d’Oléron (25 minutes), or pottering around the castle-topped oyster fishing town of Le Château d’Oléron. Quieter and wilder still, Île d’Aix, accessible by boat from Fouras an hour away, is a crescent-shaped beach with a green centre sometimes flooded by spring tides. If you want to get historical, head over to the Matata caves (40 minutes): overlooking the Gironde estuary, this network of hollows among the limestone cliffs has been inhabited since prehistoric times. For something a little more recent, take a tour of the Gallo-Roman port city of Fâ (45 minutes) or the maritime museum in La Rochelle, an hour away.

Liked: Beautiful camp site. We had our own bathroom/kitchen facilities. Was clean. The pool was very nice as was the sun bathing area. Beach was fabulous and was a good base for exploring

Disliked: The site Shop was sparse but maybe time of year. But there was supermarket close by.

Prestige powered gravel and sand campsite (Private restroom amenities)

Liked: We are two 60 somethings with a Motorhome travelling with daughter and son in law and three children with a caravan .
We loved the individual toilet cabin on the pitch with the wonderful shower and fridge etc in which we were surprised to find a welcome bottle of wine . The indoor pool was great when the weather turned a bit iffy .
We liked the closeness of other campsites and their superior shops . It was great to be able to walk to Luna Park on several occasions and let the children have several rides each time rather than having to buy at an entry price as is more usual these days .

Disliked: We were very disappointed with the odd hours the snack bar and bar opened . You could not guarantee that it would be open as advertised .
The pitch for our Motorhome although plenty big enough was horrendous underfoot as it was like a ploughed field … very deep sand which got worse each time we moved the Motorhome .
The pool at the main site was good on a hot day though very crowded and very deep with no indication on the sides as to the depth .
The shop was more or less empty .
The site itself is very quiet but some entertainment would be beneficial however the noise from other campsites and the Luna park was intrusive to some ( i wear earplugs anyway )
There was not a play park for our younger grandchildren to meet up in only some bouncy castles .

Powered gravel and sand campsite

Liked: Good pool & water slide & good selection of activities for all age children.
Staff were friendly & helpful

Disliked: We have a 4250 kg were placed on a tent pitch which was just sand, no gravel. We sank into the sand & it took us an hour to get out with the help of the wardens. They were equipped with metal ramps so this has happened before. We refused to try to get back on the pitch & were given a grass Motorhome pitch which we should have had in the first place. My brother in law was on another sand pitch with his Motorhome & again got stuck up to the axle on getting out. Clearly they have no idea how heavy Motorhomes are. The sand pitches were filthy, covered in charcoal from bbqs & were never cleaned.
Terrible pitches, dirty. No hand soap in the toilets, no grey waste water disposal. No nearby fresh water tap, only one on site for all.

Prestige powered gravel and sand campsite (Private restroom amenities)

Liked: - Camped in a privilege emplacement. Pitch size was very good and the personal toilet/shower/kitchen set up is great
- Reception staff helpful. Site very clean, great outside bar, very relaxed.
- Baguettes and pastries great from the other campsite shop only a short walk/cycle away.
- Level pitch and beautiful trees and birds.

Disliked: - At least 30 minute cycle from beach and Palmyre. 15 minutes to Les Mathes which is lovely but not a lot there.
- Luna Park (very noisy at night, great if you like rollercoasters etc. but not if you want to sleep). Not open all year so check when open.
- No outdoor pool to swim in on this site but a good indoor one and lots off sun loungers.

Powered gravel and sand campsite

Liked: Site was clean

Disliked: More of a site for static caravans, certainly wouldn't recommend for large motorhomes like us, we only stayed 1 night out of our booked 2 and still trying to get 20 euro deposit back from the entry card

Prestige powered gravel and sand campsite (Private restroom amenities)

Liked: Premium pitch had own shower/kitchen and facilities. Well worth it. We were there out of season and only got a night on route home so was quiet but pool, bar and snack bar all open on arrival. Safe for kids and dogs and lots of family holiday entertainment around this place if you head there in summer!
