It's free, quick and easy!
- In the Coubre forest, on the edge of Ronce-les-Bains
- A 20-minute walk from the beach; 20 minutes' drive from Île d'Oléron
- Outdoor pool, waterslide, restaurant, bike hire and kids' club
Forest time and beach time – go on, treat yourself to a bit of both: Camping La Pignade is in a cracking spot in the Coubre forest, just on the edge of the pretty seaside resort of Ronce-les-Bains.
Exit in one direction and you can be wandering along a network of woodland paths in just a few minutes; turn the other way and it’s about a 20-minute walk to the local beach. More? There are further sandy times to be had in nearby Île d’Oléron and Royan, and there are plenty of historic bits and family days out close by too.
While this site always makes a special effort for its guests, things really come alive during the high season, when there are regular karaoke contests, pétanque tournaments and kids' club ents to keep you and your brood entertained. Permanent leisure options include the outdoor pool (with a waterslide for teens and a paddling pool for minnows), bike hire and the games room, and there’s also an on-site hairdresser and beautician for grownup pampering time.
And they haven’t forgotten the food either – Camping La Pignade has an on-site restaurant, takeaway service and food shop, and allows barbecues (with both wood and gas-fired models available to hire for fuss-free grilling). For further eats, pick up bits at the well-stocked supermarket in town (20 minutes’ walk) or claim a table at one of the top-notch seaside restaurants along the shoreline for a scenic supper.

Local attractions
Best be planning a fair amount of beach time – there’s 25 kilometres of beach and sand dunes to explore around Ronce-les-Bains, with accessible stretches for less mobile guests and horse riding or watersports for active sorts. A nudist stretch and a surf school are about 15 minutes’ drive away, and it’s 20 minutes to La Coubre lighthouse.
Keeping to the coast, a trip to Île d’Oléron (20 minutes’ drive) comes highly recommended for both beaches and bike riding (with oysters and wine to taste along the way. Yet more beach is down in Royan (half an hour), or you might like to catch up on maritime history at the Corderie Royale naval museum (35 minutes).
There’s far more to this area than just the coastal attractions, though – perhaps you’d like to meet the beasts at La Palmyre zoo (15 minutes) or roam along the ramparts of walled town Brouage (20 minutes)? Inevitably, you’ll always come back to the shoreline in the end: maybe to explore the Matata sea caves (35 minutes) or to see sea creatures swimming at the aquarium in La Rochelle (an hour).
