It's free, quick and easy!
- Roomy safari tents on a family-friendly site in south-west France
- Pool and playground; snack bar and barbecue area
- 45 minutes to the Atlantic coast and an hour to Île de Ré
A village within a village, the grounds of Camping Le Stade Courant are dotted with organic veg patches and planters full of fragrant herbs: these are stays deep in the countryside of the Poitou-Charentes region, with a few luxury extras.
Your safari tent will be ready and waiting for you, fully furnished with beds (and bedrooms) and a nifty mobile kitchen that lets you decide where to knock up a feast. Why be in when the sun's out?
And why get out of the pool, the kids may ask. Answer: to try the massive kids' playground, or join in a family game of boules, or have drinks and snacks from the kiosk on the shady terrace. Hire bikes from the site to take a peek round the peaceful pink-tiled villages nearby.
St-Jean-d'Angèly (15 minutes' drive) has supermarkets and lively markets where you can sample the very special cheeses and wines of the area. Once you've loaded up with grub at the market, mooch down to the Boutonne river for a picnic, then walk lunch off on the river trails or join the anglers focusing on what's for dinner.

Local attractions
You can go places quickly in this relatively flat part of France, and the one place you'll definitely want to head to is the beach. Châtelaillon-Plage (50 minutes' drive) is a popular choice for families, its long sandy beaches protected by the nearby Île de Ré and its shore dotted with colourful old houses.
It's not much further to the wild dunes, salt marshes and chic villages of Île de Ré itself (an hour from the site), and its beaches are popular spots to try windsurfing and kayaking. If you fancy tackling the waters of the Charente river, head an hour's drive inland to Jarnac for cruises and canoe hire.
You can also row your way round the Parc Naturel Régional du Marais Poitevin (40 minutes), a marshland wildlife reserve croaking with bullfrogs and laced with creeks and canals. It's a remarkable spot where the sky and the water seem to merge: an unmissable sight is the local farmers taking their cows to market in little boats.
Equally memorable, for very different reasons, Vallée des Singes (an hour and a half) is a forest park where a hundred monkeys swing free amongst the visitors: see what your own monkeys make of that.
