It's free, quick and easy!
- Family-friendly site by a forest two kilometres from Ars-en-Ré
- 15 minutes' walk from the beach, along a wooded footpath
- Snack bar with evening entertainment and terrace overlooking the pool
To the Île de Ré, eh? A fine choice for your hols indeed – the 30-kilometre-long island is easily accessed by road from La Rochelle, and covered in pretty forest and beaches, with around 100 kilometres of (mercifully flat) cycle path making it a particularly fine choice for those who like a leisurely jaunt by bike.
Fill your lungs with a heady combo of pine scents and sea air by pitching up at Campiotel des Dunes, two kilometres from the village of Ars-en-Ré. From here it’s a 15-minute amble through the pine trees to a smashing sandy beach, or 15 minutes of bike pedalling to the Lilleau des Niges nature reserve to roam through the marshes and dunes in search of native birds and other wildlife.
This is more than just a handy spot from which to explore the eastern end of the island though – there’s much here to please both active types and those who seek space to chill out. The heated outdoor pool has a paddling pool and is niftily overlooked by the snack bar, with an open terrace for supervising folks or hungry nippers to get their hands on a drink or nibbles.
Also on site are a pétanque court, a playground and a common room with TV and games (table football, billiards and the like) to take care of playtime on cooler days. Swing by in summer to take part in family-friendly activities including aqua gym classes and sociable evenings of feasting and dancing.

Local attractions
Bring your bike or hire on site to make the most of the Île de Ré – it’s the best way to get around, with none of the island’s attractions very far away (it’ll only take you an hour or so to pedal to the far end of the island, on almost flat paths).
Start your roaming at Ars-en-Ré, where you can nibble your way round the daily market, visit the harbour or play games of tennis or miniature golf. It’s also just a short bike ride from the site to a watersports centre and an equestrian centre offering fab horse riding trips on the beach for all ages.
Other recommended spots around the island include the walled town of Saint-Martin-de-Ré (also home to a colony of donkeys sporting colourful trousers), Lefort goat’s cheese farm and the gorgeous beaches of Gros Jonc and Conche des Baleines.
