  • Family-friendly site with cowboy theme, 20 minutes' drive from Laon
  • On-site fishing and easy access to many hiking trails
  • Pool, masseuse, restaurant, go-kart hire and play area
Cowboys, carp and chilled-out massage sessions: what a winning combination... All can be had at Picardy's Camping Les Étangs du Moulin, an Aisne countryside site in a seven-hectare forest with cowboy-themed holidays, carp fishing and modern facilities decorated with a Western style. Adults will be likely be gunning for a session from the masseuse available to book on site, while juniors will approve mightily of the cowboy food in the restaurant, served up along with lighter bites; and the go-kart hire so kids can go careering around the site. There's also a heated indoor pool open throughout the season, pétanque and volleyball courts, and a play area not far from the pitching field: oui, this is a family-friendly site… And if you want to sing yourself around the surrounding countryside? Canter along to the splendid hikes and mountain bike routes of nearby Saint-Gobain Forest.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked Wow, what a cool place! We really loved the vibe. Such a pretty place with nice lakes. Fabulous bar in the saloon theme. We didn’t use the restaurant as we had already bought groceries but it looked great and lots of people going to dine. Friendly and helpful staff, nice pastries in the morning, and brilliant pool. Clean facilities. All round just a really fun stopover on our way back to the ferry port. Thanks very much!

Disliked Restaurant food was tragic, dry and while the andouilles is a local delicacy even us as people who will generally eat anything found it totally unpalatable

Power optional grass campsite

Liked I really like the vibe of the place that for sure. Clean showers and toilets, big plus for WiFi. I felt very comfortable and safe as a solo female travel.

Disliked I came on a bike, didn't like the place I had my pitch picked for me, only because I was afraid I will drop my bike. Other that that all good!

Local attractions

After a few days around the forest or swimming/chilling on site, get along to other highlights of the region, like the medieval town of Laon about 12 kilometres away, where top picks include its its 12th-century cathedral and a wander down its alleys to the Old Bishop's Palace, Hôtel-Dieu and to the citadel. Also within about 20 minutes' drive are the Chemin des Dames, the 30 kilometres of 'ladies paths' that became the site for the three Aisne battles in World War I. Several French, British and German war memorials and cemeteries now lie along its route; guided tours are available from the visitor centre at the paths' Dragon's Lair network of caves. Another famed attraction in the area is the Château de Coucy (10 kilometres), the huge feudal fortress overlooking the valley of the River Ailette that's been standing since the thirteenth century and been a designated monument historique since the nineteenth.
