It's free, quick and easy!
- Family-friendly site, 20 minutes’ drive to Saint-Jean-de-Monts beaches
- A 35-minute drive to L'île aux Papillons zoo and 70 to Puy du Fou
- Kitchen with fridge and microwave; barbecues, pool and playground
Choosing a spot for checking out Challans and the lush beaches around Saint-Jean-de-Monts? Et voilà: Dallas en Vendée’s family-friendly cottages, a few minutes’ drive from this Vendée town and 20 from the coast.
When you’re not making tracks for the sand, get comfy at the park on one of the sun loungers dotted around the outdoor pool (open May to September) or dive in for a dip. A playground and trampoline are next to the water, so you can easily keep an eye on the kids while they mess about.
When the tiddlers aren’t toddling around the park, a flatscreen TV is in your cottage to entertain them – along with the rest of the gang – and the free wifi comes in handy for lining up your current favourite series on your laptop when there’s nothing you fancy on the box. For tech-free relaxing, recline on your balcony or patio with a chilled drink in hand.
For eats to accompany your tipple, the cottages all have a kitchen with a fridge and microwave, so rustling up ready meals is a cinch, and a separate dining room and lounge are on hand for tucking into said culinary creations. If you fancy taking your cooking skills alfresco, barbecues are permitted (and provided), so grilled fare can be on the menu in the shake of a tong.

Local attractions
Creative type? Loop around L'ile aux Artisans to catch more than 20 craftsmen at work with materials like ceramics, textiles and glass (five minutes’ drive). More into history? The atmospheric ruins of moated Château de Commequiers (15 minutes) are well worth a look.
Nearby natural sights to nosey round include the Passage du Gois causeway (20 minutes), which is only accessible at low tide and leads to Noirmoutier island’s Dames and Sableaux beaches (40 minutes). The isle is also home to a 12th-century castle, with a museum of artefacts from as far back as the prehistoric era, and the Sealand Aquarium.
The coast around Saint-Jean-de-Monts (20 minutes) is also rather lovely: head to beaches like Plage Central, the Plage des Demoiselles and the Plage de la Tonnelle for sandy times. If the kids have worn out their buckets and spades, entertain them with a trip to L'île aux Papillons zoo (35 minutes) and the ever-popular Puy du Fou historical theme park (an hour and 10 minutes).
