  • Family site five minutes' walk from Saint-Vincent-sur-Jard
  • Zoo, waterpark, go-kart circuit and adventure park within half an hour
  • Direct access to a sandy beach along a woodland footpath
Who’s up for some fresh air? Beach time? Woodland walks? Days out at the zoo, a waterpark, an aquarium or a treetop adventure park? If that’s an enthusiastic ‘oui’ to any/all of the above (likely if you’re anywhere in the vicinity of the small sorts), hotfoot it to Camping du Pied Girard, a quiet family-friendly site in Saint-Vincent-sur-Jard. Coast and countryside are both easily accessible from this Vendée site – the nearest beach is a 15-minute amble away through the woods, and walking trails (ranging from two to six kilometres in length) run from the site through the forests, along the riverbank and by the coast. Wriggly kids not fond of spending their hols strapped into the car will be chuffed to hear that all the previously-mentioned days out involve less than a half-hour drive. Even closer, the village centre’s only a few minutes’ walk away for a supermarket, restaurant and summertime schedule of open-air concerts and night markets. Mature trees fill much of the site’s land, so there’s always a shaded spot for a snooze if you’re seeking to escape the sun/chill out after an eventful day. Facilities on site include a playground and a pétanque court, and there’s a tennis court a short walk away for those who fancy a bit more activity.

Powered grass RV campsite

Power optional grass travel trailer, tent or trailer tent campsite

Power optional grass travel trailer, tent or trailer tent campsite

Simple but attractive & friendly woodland site in a great location.

Power optional grass travel trailer, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked The campsite location was fab - a short walk from decent family beaches & right on a safe cycle route to reach places further afield. Do book ahead for the water park (a short drive away). Sadly I dithered over it & both days we could do were sold out online when I next checked.
The site’s tree canopied pitches were attractive & branches handy for hanging out wet beach gear or putting up a proper washing line/hammock.
Washroom facilities were basic but fine - this is a very affordable site in a super coastal spot. Bring loo roll & handwashing soap though as their absence was a new no-frills discovery for us!
Washing up area was a great size, under cover & always clean & tidy.
I couldn’t seem to access the site’s WiFi from our pitch, but there was great 4G signal so it wasn’t an issue.
Staff on reception were friendly, very present & helpful.
We’ll likely be back to this low-key site for its friendly vibe & great location.

Disliked None of the loos had seats, so practice your squats! Ditto no loo roll or hand soap anywhere.

Sheer bad luck rather than a site flaw, but packing down the tent on the only rainy morning of our stay with gritty sand & pine needles clinging to everything was no fun!

Liked Nice campsite, pitches were okay but under trees which meant there was a lot of leaf litter but good for the shade from the summer sun.
Toilets & showers were okay, washing up facilities were good and always clean.

Disliked No grass and lots of leaves which meant a lot of sweeping.

Local attractions

The Vendée’s a fab area for hols if you’re looking to keep the kids entertained/wear them out so they’ll slumber soundly. Among the top picks around here are splashing down the slides at O’Gliss waterpark (15 minutes’ drive), zooming around the track at Vendée Kart Circuit (20 minutes) and swinging through the trees at Indian Forest adventure park (20 minutes). For a bit of history mashed up with a fun day out, try out caveman life at the Cairn stone age living museum (10 minutes) or hit Le Château des Aventuriers (15 minutes) for castle tours, dinosaur trails, swashbuckling pirates and all sorts of rides and games. Château de Talmont (15 minutes) may be more your style if you’re after more of a traditional grand house visit (although they’ll still throw in jousting demos and the like from time to time). Creature-spotting outings nearby include insights into underwater life at the Vendée Aquarium (20 minutes) and exotic encounters with giraffes, big cats, monkeys and penguins at Zoo des Sables d’Olonne (25 minutes).
