  • Small site in an adventure-friendly part of Vendée
  • A 40-minute drive from Puy du Fou; an hour and a half from beaches
  • Heated pool, fishing lake and restaurant with a terrace on site
Searching for somewhere small and sweet? Camping L’Etruyère might just hit the spot… framed by greenery, a hilly landscape and a fishing lake, with regular visitors in the form of a cuckoo and a Eurasian hoopoe, this site has a good combo of peace and adventure. In the Vendée (a cycling hotspot, by the way), this site is 40 minutes’ drive away from the Puy du Fou theme park and an hour and a half from the Atlantic's beaches. Cycling mode activated… this region has thousands of kilometres of cycling paths and routes both long and small. Handily, you’ll be able to career off onto cycling or walking routes directly from the site, mapped out for you so you won’t get too lost. However, the outdoorsy activities don’t just start when you head off site, as there’s a fishing lake and a heated outdoor swimming pool with a waterslide on site. When you’re ready to wind down from all the action, the site has a terraced restaurant with a rather relaxing view over the lake (if you’re not too busy digging into the food already). While there’s plenty of peace around the site, you won’t be strained to find somewhere to shop for your essentials. The closest bakery is just 25 minutes’ walk away from the site. After all, barbecues are permitted here too, so you may want to gather together some goodies for the grill.

Liked: Friendly owners, well maintained pitches, you can choose where you pitch, or we could, maybe as it wasn’t too busy. The pool is small but lovely, nice little slide and deep enough to have fun. We ate in the restaurant which was very nice. We stayed as we were going to puy du fou, which was about 45mins away.

Liked: Beautiful peaceful spot, very friendly and helpful owners, restaurant food was great and there was even a tasty veggie option which is not always the case in france. Owners helped us with cycling routes sharing their app and made good suggestions for routes. Leaving felling very relaxed.

2 bedroom safari tent

Liked: Remote. Nice spot spoilt by owners pettiness.

Disliked: We booked two nights here in a safari tent, costing 270 Euros. The whole place is run by a man and lady, I assume a husband and wife team. We were asked to pre-authorise 100 Euros on arrival as a security deposit. On checking in we were handed a leaflet by the lady with EVERYTHING itemised in the tent, down to the last teaspoon. AS IF anyone on holiday would spend 30 minutes or so going through this. Time to use the pool instead. The lady owner had told us that men needed to wear tight shorts in the pool but this didn't apply for children. So my 6 year old son wore his usual swimming costume. However, the male owner was watching as we entered the pool - and came striding over to announce my son had the wrong swimmers. I explained I was told children do not require this. "Who told you this?" he replied abruptly. "Your wife", I informed him. So he strode off, angry. This, we were finding, was not a relaxing place to stay. We decided to use the restaurant for dinner and arrived at 7pm. We waited 20 minutes for our orders to be taken - then waited until 8.20pm - A WHOLE HOUR for our (small) meals to arrive. Our children were so hungry. There was no apology. So now it was 9pm, time for bed for our children. But unfortunately the sanitary facilities are closed for cleaning every night 9-9.30pm. This is the first time I've even known cleaning to be at this time. It's when children need to use it. But there's another shock - there are no toilet seats so you need to squat. But for children, this is IMPOSSIBLE. If you plan on coming here with a child it's worth bearing this in mind. For bedtime we had our own bedding so we didn't need the duvets and pillows in the tent. So we folded them up and stored them under the bed for safekeeping. The day we vacated we wiped down tables and the small portable cooker we used once, put chairs back where they were found and put the duvets back where they were found (on the beds). We drove to the exit to hand in the key to find the lady rushing off somewhere, so I quickly asked if I could hand her the keys. "Oh, er, you'll need to do the checkout", she said. Check out I thought? Did she want me to go through the detailed inventory for 30 minutes with her? Off she rushed as the man arrived on the scene. I said, "I'm sorry, I don't have time to go back up to the tent, we have a ferry to catch". He responds "Oh right, well your deposit - we need to check about that." I gave him the key and off he went. I've stayed in many places on holiday but NEVER had to do an inspection at check out from a holiday rental. There is a level of trust on both sides that the host will fairly judge if you damaged or stolen anything after you have left and you'll be honest with them about anything. When we arrived home back in England 16 hours later we had been emailed that ALL our deposit would be kept - 100 Euros. The main reason - the duvets and pillows were "heavily soiled" and had to be all washed. The same ones we had stored under the bed and not used! Evidently, you're "expressly not allowed" to put the duvets on the ground - another rule. And who writes that? This is not a prison. If the floor was dirty when we checked in, that's DEFINITELY not our fault. In addition, apparently we hadn't wiped the portable cooker to their liking and a glass was missing (it was never there). BUT - it raises a HUGE question - are they actually expecting customers to prepare the tent to a level where the next customer just checks straight in? Really?! Since Covid, you would expect an owner to spend 10 minutes or so preparing accommodation for health and safety measures. They claim to have "high standards" after all. The floor under the bed by their own admission was filthy. The 100 Euros they took for this is PLAIN THEFT. He's refusing to refund it so I'm claiming it back through my credit card. He's told me he will respond to a review so read below for his. It will be a reminder of the rules...

Disliked: No toilet seats, this really isn’t ideal for women or young children! We booked a table for the on-site restaurant and then were told all the outside tables were taken and had to sit and wait for a table to be free, which was very odd. Sometimes felt like you had to tread on eggshells a little with the owners. Weren’t able to have a key for entry when we checked in as there wasn’t any left but then when we went out for the day had to wait ages to be let in and felt as though we were being a nuisance.

Local attractions

Adventure isn’t too far away from here, but where to begin? How about the scenic white beaches in Les Sables-d'Olonne (an hour and a half’s drive) and the surf-worthy waves that often start up? Perhaps you may be drawn in by the dreamy coastal town of La Rochelle (an hour and 20 minutes) and its medieval houses, 17th-century arches and old harbour? It may be that you visit the top-notch theme parks first, such as Puy du Fou (40 minutes) or Futuroscope (an hour and a half)? There are other theme parks of a more miniature size around here too, with or without water-themed rides. For something to jazz up the itinerary a little but still just as thrilling, Parc Adventure 79 (10 minutes) has zipwires, treetop courses and laser tag, while Natur'Zoo Mervent (20 minutes) has zoo animals and a kids’ corner with a mini farm and playground. To the south, there’s the green so-called ‘Venice of France’, Marais Poitevin (50 minutes) where you may hike or hire a boat. Then, to the south of the site, Forêt Domaniale de Mervent-Vouvant (20 minutes) keeps a nice trove of walking and cycling trails with shade from the forest canopies.
