Looking for a family break in secluded countryside and keen to stay in some very unusual glamping accommodation? Whether you’re camping with the kids, holidaying with the dogs or after a cosy couple’s break, Kathy Romet’s Aux insolites du Bonheur de Vivre is waiting for you in Maigné village, in a peaceful corner of the rural Pays de la Loire.
Here there are a variety of yurts and pods all decked out in colourful, bohemian designs, with cheery bed spreads, cosy armchairs and brightly painted furniture. As this is strictly off-grid glamping, there’s no electricity, so don’t forget to pack torches for moving around after dark. You’ll also need to bring your own bedding.
Much is provided, though, from hot running showers to sinks for washing up and a shared kitchen with a dishwasher, gas stove and microwave as well as fridges to keep your provisions fresh.
If you’d like to make new friends on site, there’s lots going on, with tomahawk-throwing sessions and badminton challenges for all the family, and games of boules or hoops. You can chat about your day’s adventures around the giant firepit (an extra charge) in the central square, and there’s also a barn for shelter on the odd rainy day.
If you’re longing for some laid-back adults-only time, the owner holds occasional dreamcatcher workshops (extra charge) and there’s an al fresco eco-sauna where you can chill – and take a reviving cold shower when you’re done.
Pick up goodies from the boulangerie in Le Guesseau (15 minutes’ walk) to eat around the campfire, or explore the area to find traditional auberges for long, leisurely lunches.

Local attractions
There’s lots of exploring to be done around the village of Maigné (five minutes’ walk), which has a lovely old church, a couple of mills and traditional manor houses. Just a little further afield, the apartments and formal gardens of elegant Château de Villaines (10 minutes’ drive) are open for guided tours by its owners, and other lovely historic mansions to explore include Château de Varennes l’Enfant (half an hour) and Château de Martigné (25 minutes).
If you’re holidaying with kids, spend the morning losing them (and finding them again) at Labyrinthe chez Alice (35 minutes) or take them to see big cats and elephants at Zoo de la Flèche (40 minutes), where there are also sea lion shows and raptor flight displays.
For a couple of leisurely days out in tranquil countryside, go fishing for trout at Hubeau Mill (45 minutes) or play a round of golf at the riverside course in Montjoie (half an hour). Up the activity pace considerably by following in the footsteps of motor-racing greats around the Le Mans 24-hour road-race circuit (20 minutes).
