- Luxury site on a llama farm in the Loire Valley
- A 40-minute drive from Le Mans racetrack, the Loire and medieval Tours
- Llama treks from site; swimming pool, outdoor kitchen with fridge
There can’t be that many corners of the globe where you can combine llama treks, motor racing, grand châteaux, fishing and river cruises. Here’s one in France, just for your good self.
Loire Valley Llama Farm Stay is a cracking combo of pastures, woodland and lakes, (seven hectares' worth), about two minutes’ drive from the Pays de Loire village of Lavernat. It has flower-filled gardens to roam about in and a big pool to splash and swim in... and of course several llamas.
Accommodation is in bell tents, with tastefully decked out interiors that are cool in the summer months and cosy in the winter (especially with the woodburners going). Outside there’s a barbecue for your own use with outdoor seating, along with a shared outdoor kitchen kitted out with a rotisserie-barbecue, sink and fridge. The shared washrooms are bright and clean with plentiful hot showers.
You can meet the llamas (they’d be insulted if you didn’t at least say hello), or for a more intensive encounter, book a trek through the surrounding countryside which includes llama-handling tips at the start and a cream tea at the end.
For supplies and refuelling, there's a bar in Lavernat, just up the road, and Mayet (10 minutes’ drive) has an array of supermarkets, shops and bakeries.

Local attractions
Petrolheads will be pleased to find themselves around 40 minutes from Le Mans, home of the famed 24 Hours race, regular car and truck meets and a substantial museum. Those tempted by the roar of engines and the smell of burning rubber can have a go on the go-karting track next door.
For a quieter and carbon-neutral kind of travelling, it’s also a 40-minute trip into Tours, where you can hire bikes and link up with the 900-kilometre La Loire à Vélo cycling route, taking bikers past vineyards, châteaux, troglodyte villages and finally down to the Atlantic Ocean.
On wheels or on foot, Tours makes a top spot for a day trip with its fine art museum, 11th-century château and lively food market; head to the latter then down to the Parc de St Radegonde for a riverside picnic. The equally elegant river towns and châteaux of Blois, Amboise and Saumur are all around an hour away.
If you enjoyed your time with the llamas, zip over to Zoo de la Flèche (40 minutes) to meet more wildlife, including bears, hippos and dolphins, or get in touch with your own inner dolphin on Papéa Park’s slides, chutes and log flumes, also 40 minutes away.
For more watery antics, including swimming, fishing and messing about in boats, make for the lake and the leisure base at Mansigné, half an hour away.
